Scott not wanting to take chances in preseason

LAFAYETTE -- When the regular season begins next month, Coach
Byron Scott hopes all his starters will be available.
He does not want to jeopardize those chances by taking
unnecessary risks in the preseason, especially involving
Hornets starting center Jamaal Magloire.
In Friday's 103-100 overtime loss to the Chicago Bulls, Magloire
suffered a mildly sprained left ankle. To avoid the potential
for further injury, Scott did not play Magloire on Saturday night
against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Cajundome.
"His ankle is a little sore, so we figured, what the heck," Scott
said. "He can just relax. We have a few days, so the (injured)
guys can take more rest and get some treatment."
Magloire could return by Tuesday's game against the Philadelphia
76ers at New Orleans Arena.
"I'm going to see how it goes day-to-day," Magloire said. "But
it's nothing major, I just twisted it."
Backup center Chris Andersen also missed Saturday's game because
of back spasms. With both centers unavailable to play, P.J. Brown
earned his first start at center.
Forward Rodney Rogers and guard David Wesley, who both have
strained right hamstrings, missed their third consecutive games.
"Sometime next week, they'll be healthy enough to play," Scott
said. "I don't know if it will be Thursday or Saturday. Then
again, I'm not going to force it. I know how hamstrings are."
HOT SHOT: Rookie guard J.R. Smith regained his shooting stroke
after missing eight of 10 shots against the Bulls. He started
the game making four of his first eight shots and led the
Hornets with 14 points in the first half. He finished with a
game-high 22 points.
EXTENDED PLAY: Both Alex Garcia and Lee Nailon got extended
minutes after not playing Friday. Nailon played 26 minutes and
scored 17 points. Garcia played 13 minutes and scored eight
points.
BACK IN ACTION: Forward Tremaine Fowlkes played for the first
time since this past Wednesday's preseason opener against the
Dallas Mavericks. He missed Friday's game because of a left
thigh bruise. Fowlkes played 10 minutes but did not score.
FREE THROW OVERLOAD: Referees have been instructed by the
league to call fouls on defenders who extend their forearms
to impede the progress of offensive players. It's causing the
games to last longer because of the amount of free throws being
shot. On Friday, the Hornets and Bulls combined to take 104
free throws and the game lasted three hours. The Hornets shot
59 free throws. On Saturday, they didn't get to the line as
much, but plenty of fouls were called. The Clippers made 32 of
47 free throws; the Hornets made 23 of 29.
"I think what the NBA is obviously trying to do is give the
offense as much advantage as possible, wanting the scoring to
go up," Scott said. "I don't know if the scoring will go up,
but the free-throw attempts sure will."
