Magloire sprains left ankle
Top pick Smith has ups and downs in second game

CHICAGO -- Starting center Jamaal Magloire suffered a mildly
sprained left ankle trying to get a rebound during Saturday's
loss to the Chicago Bulls.
His status for tonight's game against the Los Angeles Clippers
at the Cajundome in Lafayette is questionable. Magloire was
hurt after playing seven minutes in the third quarter, and he
did not return. He scored eight points in 16 minutes.
FIRST ROAD GAME: Hornets rookie J.R. Smith got out to a fast
start in his first road game, making two of his first three
shots. But he played only seven minutes in the first half
because Scott wanted to get a longer look at backups competing
for roster spots.
After sitting out the second quarter, Smith could not regain
his shooting touch during the third quarter. He missed all four
shots, including two 3-pointers.
In Wednesday's preseason opener, Smith scored a team-high 19
points on 6-of-9 shooting.
POINT GUARD BATTLE: Five point guards are fighting for possibly
one spot on the Bulls' roster. Among those competing is former
Salmen star Chris Duhon, who played at Duke and was the Bulls'
second-round draft pick in June. Duhon is battling Mike Wilks
and Jannero Pargo for the spot, while starter Kirk Hinrich and
first-round draft pick Ben Gordon are locks.
"We like the things that he has done," Bulls coach Scott Skiles
said. "He has good command of the team when he's on the floor."
Duhon may have put himself ahead in the race by playing
exceptionally well during the third quarter, when he made two of
three shots, grabbed three rebounds and had three assists.
ENDURANCE TEST: The Hornets have their first back-to-back set
tonight, but Scott doesn't anticipate any problems.
"The veterans
are used to playing 30 to 35 minutes a game and now they're playing
20, so back-to-back is not that big of a deal, especially now when
they're getting only 20," Scott said. "But it's a wait-and-see
attitude for the younger guys, especially those who played 20-plus
minutes (Friday)."
LONG LOOK: Rookie forward Nate Williams and Britton Johnsen did not
play in Wednesday's preseason opener against Dallas. But they got
plenty of action against the Bulls. Johnsen was the first backup
Scott put in the game, and he airballed his first shot. Williams
showed a little more consistency as a shooter, sinking his first
two jumpers. Johnsen played 34 minutes and scored 11 points, and
Williams played 13 minutes. Junior Arrington played 31 minutes and
scored 12 points.
QUICK SHOTS: Former Hornets strength coordinator Marc Boff is now
the Bulls' assistant athletic trainer. . . .
Forward Rodney Rogers
dressed but did not play because of a strained hamstring. David
Wesley missed his second consecutive preseason game because of a
hamstring injury.
