Inside Training Camp: October 7, 2004
Head Coach Byron Scott
(on camp today)
I always call the third day of training camp “hump day”.
It’s normally the toughest day of training camp because
you’ve still got a little soreness. You’re feet are
sore. You’re tired. You’ve got some aches and pains now
so this is normally the toughest day and I thought the
guys ca me out and did a heck of a job today. We probably
ran even more today than we did in the first day. We did
a lot more offensive stuff today because I thought the
offense right now is behind the defense, which is
understandable. Offensively guys aren’t understanding
some of the things that I want to get done so we spent
a lot of time on the offensive end today. We did a lot
of full court stuff, 5-on-0 stuff and I just thought it
was a good day for them to say let me cut it short today
so they can come back revved up tomorrow and ready to go.
(on if he planned on letting his guys go early)
I had 30 more minutes of stuff to do but they are things
that we can do tomorrow. It’s not big deal. I just felt
they earned the right today for practice to be cut short.
We did some conditioning today that I thought hit them
pretty hard and they got through it. Like I said, the
guys are working their butts off. As an entire coaching
staff, we appreciate the effort right now and every now
and then you have to show them that you appreciate them
by knocking some of that time off.
(on if he’s been frustrated by his players expressing
their discontent)
I haven’t been frustrated about it at all. Both of
those guys have been very professional. They have come
to practice every day and done everything that I’ve
asked them to do. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a
dead issue. It’s something that that we don’t have
to and will not talk about again because we’re just
trying to focus in to basketball.
(on the trio of George Lynch, Rodney Rogers and Lee Nailon
filling in at small forward)
George and Rodney for sure are going to eat up most of
that time. And there are times that we’re going to go
small too. It just depends on the situation right now.
All three of those guys are looking good. They all have
their positives as far as what we’re doing on both ends
of the court and they all have their negatives so it’s
just a matter of making sure that all three of those guys,
if Lee makes the team, can help us fill in that three spot.
(on Alex Garcia)
I hadn’t seen him play before. I know he got hurt last
year. He broke his ankle. Allan Bristow was very high on
him when he talked to me about him and thought that we
should sign him. The first time he came here and we had
him working out, I was very impressed with him and have
been to this very day. He’s a steal. He’s a guy that can
flat out play in this league. He’s going to be around for
a while.
(on Garcia’s communication and understanding English)
It’s been okay. I think a lot of it, when you’re
one-on-one and you’re dealing with him, he understands
pretty well. When you get around a group of guys and
they’re all talking at the same time, I think that’s when
he has problems. He’s picked up everything that I’ve told
him and when I feel he’s not picking it up, I just pull
him to the side and explain it a little bit slower for him
to make sure that he does understand.
