Strengths:
Pickett is one of those fantastic college basketball players
whose pro potential is very hard to read. He's a good defender,
gets in the passing lanes extremely well, picks up lots of
steals and has a knack for anticipating his matchups' next move.
He can defend quicker smaller point guards or taller stronger
shooting guards equally well. Just as important as his defense
for his professional aspirations is his shooting ability. Pickett
is a lights out shooter with a very quick release. Some consider
him to be one of the best better shooters in the NCAA. Pickett is
one of those guys who is very hard not to notice on the court in
spite of his size, he is a very vocal leader on a very young and
talented FSU team and he has a certain swagger to his game that
you only really see from very confident and talented players.
Pickett is built very well, he has an NBA body except for the
height, very strong arms and legs and he always keeps himself in
great shape because of his work ethic. He's a great free throw
shooter, hitting 90% of his shots for the year. A very clutch
player, thrives when the game is on the line and not afraid to
demand the ball. A good leaper and an all around above average
athlete. Excellent rebounder for a player of his size, lead FSU
in that category last year. Pickett is a mature team player that
understands the game very well and always gives 110%. Extremely
competitive. He's a gym rat and will work very hard to improve
his game.
Weaknesses:
About 2-3 inches shorter then the prototypical NBA Shooting
Guard. Doesn't really have point guard skills so don't expect a
position change in the pros. What you see is what you get with
him. Doesn't have the quickest first step, prefers to settle for
the three sometimes rather then taking the ball strong to the
hole and picking up easy points from the line. Tends to be a
little too aggressive on defense sometimes and picks up early
fouls.
Competition:
Numbers are down slightly from last season because FSU has a
much stronger team this year. Pickett was forced to play over
33 minutes per game last year because of the Seminoles lack of
depth and this year his minutes have been cut by more then 25%.
Outlook:
Pickett is in all likelihood a 2nd round prospect because of
his lack of height and explosiveness. With that said, I think
he could be an excellent role player off the bench on the right
team that brings solid defense and offensive firepower with his
shooting range. He could fit in well on a lineup with a taller
point guard like Marko Jaric, Reece Gaines or Jiri Welsch where
he would be guarding the opposing PG. He's a nitche player that
probably has a place in the NBA and will likely be drafted
somewhere in the middle of the second round. FSU's coach, Leonard
Hamilton is a former NBA coach (Washington Wizards, hired by
Jordan) and he will make sure that people know what kind of a
player Pickett is.
Misc. Facts:
In 2003 as a junior he was named to the ACC All-Defensive team,
tied for fifth in the nation with a 2.83 steals per game average.
Played two years of Junior College one year at Indian River and
one year at Daytona Beach Community College. Pickett originally
signed with Dave Odom and the South Carolina Gamecocks before
the start of the 2001-2002 season, but an obscure ruling by the
SEC prevented him from enrolling.
Comments:
Best Case Scenario: Ronald Murray, Keith Bogans, Cuttino Mobley
Worst Case Scenario: Your favorite undersized SG in Europe.
Trajan Langdon (more athletic, not as good of a shooter), Adrian
Peterson, Kirk Penney (better defender)
