The agent for Byron Scott said Wednesday night he hasn't heard
from Hornets officials since leaving town last week and is not
presently in contract negotiations with the team.
"Nothing at all has been drawn up, and I don't expect to hear
from them until (Thursday) or the next day," Brian McInerney
said Wednesday when reached at his Southern California home.
"There haven't been any sort of negotiations yet.
"We've just been following what has been going on in the
newspaper, and I've only talked to them when I was in New
Orleans last week. Byron and I said we'd wait for them to get
back to us."
McInerney said Scott was waiting for his wife, Anita, to return
to their New Jersey home on Wednesday night or today from the
West Coast so they could discuss the New Orleans coaching
situation.
Scott, who coached the New Jersey Nets to back-to-back Eastern
Conference championships the previous two NBA seasons, was
interviewed by Hornets majority owner George Shinn during two
days last week.
Shinn also has interviewed TNT analyst and former Cleveland
Cavaliers coach Mike Fratello, former Hornets assistant Brian
Hill, who was head coach of the Orlando Magic and Vancouver
Grizzlies, and Michael Cooper, coach of the WNBA's Los Angeles
Sparks.
It has been rumored that Scott, a three-time NBA champion as a
player with the Los Angeles Lakers, might want to wait to see
whether Phil Jackson decides to return to the Lakers next season
before accepting another NBA coaching offer.
McInerney dismissed that notion Wednesday. Scott was said to be
playing golf Wednesday and did not return calls.
"The Lakers' job is not open now," McInerney said. "So that's a
question we don't have to answer."
A league source indicated following Shinn's final interview with
Hill on Tuesday that a decision on a replacement for Tim Floyd,
fired after one season May 7, could be forthcoming soon.
Shinn again was unavailable for comment Wednesday.
Hornets executive vice president for basketball operations and
general manager Bob Bass said Wednesday the team has been quiet
about the search because, "We can't make stuff up. There are some
things you don't talk about, and that's what goes on in the
interview. You just don't discuss it. I just don't think it plays
to the advantage of the applicants or the team, either one."
