2003-04 Year In Review
BARON NAMED THIRD TEAM ALL-NBA
Baron Davis was named Third Team All-NBA, the first All-NBA
selection of his career...the honor capped off what has been his
best season in the NBA in 2003-04...he was selected as a reserve
for the 2004 Eastern Conference All-Star Team (his second All-Star
selection) and also won the 989 Sports Skills Challenge during
All-Star Saturday Night...he finished the season ranked sixth in
the NBA in scoring, fourth in assists and first in steals per game
to become just the third player since the 1976-77 season to finish
in the top 10 in those three categories (joining Gary Payton and
Michael Adams) and just the third Hornets player to lead the league
in any statistical category (Eddie Jones led in steals in 1999-00
and Glen Rice led in three-point percentage in 1996-97)...he was
named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for November after
averaging 24.3 points, 8.2 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 2.8 steals and
leading the Hornets to an 11-6 record and was named Eastern
Conference Player of the Week for the period ending 11/2 after
averaging 24.7 points, 8.3 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 steals per
game and leading the Hornets to a 3-0 record...he became the first
player in Hornets history to record three straight games with at
least five steals when he did so from 10/29 to 11/1 (he then
stretched the streak to four games with five steals 11/3 at ATL) and
set a franchise record with 582 three-pointers attempted (breaking
his own record of 478, set in the 2001-02 season).
PJ HONORED BY NBA
PJ Brown was presented with the Joe Dumars Trophy for the 2004 NBA
Sportsmanship Award prior to Game Three of the Hornets' series with
the Heat...the award, which is voted on by NBA players, honors a
player who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court--
ethical behavior, fair play and integrity...Brown was the Central
Division winner of the Sportsmanship Award each of the past three
seasons...the NBA will donate $25,000 on behalf of Brown to the PJ
and Dee Brown Foundation.
BIG CAT ON THE PROWL
Jamaal Magloire received the news that he was named to his first
All-Star team on Feb. 3...over the remainder of the season, he
proved his doubters wrong by increasing his numbers and becoming
even more of a dominant force in the paint...he became the first
Hornet in over seven years to register a 20/20 game when had 23
points and a career-high 21 rebounds 3/7 at TOR (and was the
first Hornet to record a 20/20 game on the road in over 13 years)
and made the game-winning shot 3/23 vs. DET...he was also one of
only four players in the Eastern Conference who averaged a
double-double...as good as he has been since Feb. 3, he was been
even better in April, when he was named Eastern Conference Player
of the month...Big Cat averaged 21.7 points on .494 shooting
(44-of-89 FGA) to go along with 12.1 rebounds and 1.0 blocks while
leading the Hornets to a 4-3...he also recorded 20 point-10
rebound games in six of the last seven contests of the season...so
far in the playoffs, however, he has failed to keep up with his
late season efforts…the following shows what he has done since
being named an All-Star compared to his numbers before his All-Star
selection, what he did over the last month of the season and what he
has done in the playoffs:
MAGLOIRE PTS REB BLK FG% FT%
2004 Playoffs 11.8 9.0 1.2 .424 (25-59) .750 (21-28)
April 2004 21.7 12.1 0.9 .494 (44-89) .853 (64-75)
Since All-Star Nomination* 16.4 11.9 1.3 .488 (185-379) .791 (186-235)
Before All-Star Nomination 11.8 9.4 1.2 .460 .712

SIMPLY THE BEST
After injuries limited him to a sub-par season in 2002-03, Baron
Davis is back in All-Star form after a tremendous showing this
season...Davis got off to his best start ever and has been dominant
on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court...the following
shows a comparison of Davis' numbers to those of the league's other
top point guards this season:
NBA POINT GUARDS PTS AST REB STL
Baron Davis (NO) 22.9 7.5 4.3 2.4
Steve Francis (HOU) 16.6 6.2 5.5 1.8
Jason Kidd (NJ) 15.5 9.2 6.4 1.8
Stephon Marbury (NYK) 20.2 8.9 3.2 1.6
Steve Nash (DAL) 14.5 8.8 3.0 0.9
Gary Payton (LAL) 14.6 5.5 4.2 1.2
PROTECTING THE BALL
Baron Davis' assist-to-turnover ratio greatly affected the Hornets'
win-to-loss ratio this season...BD averaged nearly nine assists but
turned the ball over 2.7 times per game during Hornets wins on the
season...during Hornets losses, he averaged just 6.3 assists per game
and turned the ball over four times per game...Davis recorded five or
more turnovers in a game 18 times this season (the team was 5-13 when
he does so) and recorded five or less assists 19 times (the team was
4-15 when he does so)...the same held true in the playoffs, as BD
recorded 27 assists with just five turnovers in the Hornets' victories
in Games Three, Four and Six (including 10 assists and no turnovers in
Game Four):
DAVIS AST TO RATIO
36 Wins 8.5 2.6 3.3:1
31 Losses 6.3 3.9 1.6:1
Playoff Wins 9.0 1.7 5.3:1
Playoff Losses 5.5 3.5 1.6:1
12 YEARS OF WINNING
The Hornets clinched their 12th straight season with a .500 or better
record with a 94-78 win in the regular season finale 4/14 at WAS....
the Hornets achieved their first .500 or better season during the
1992-93 campaign, their fifth season of existence, with a 44-38 mark...
they have not finished with a losing record since then....only Utah
(21 years) and Portland (15 years) have longer streaks.
IT'S BEEN ALMOST 30 YEARS Baron Davis finished sixth in the NBA in
scoring at 22.9 ppg and fourth in the league in assists with 7.5 apg,
just missing a chance to be in the top five in both categories....the
last point guard to be in the top five in both scoring and assists was
Nate "Tiny" Archibald in 1975-76, when he averaged 24.8 ppg (fourth in
league) and 7.9 apg (second in the league) for the season....Davis was
first in the NBA steals at 2.36 spg, making him the first player in NBA
history to finish the season in the top six in scoring, assists and
steals (Gary Payton and Michael Adams are the only two players to ever
finish in the top 10 in all three categories since 1976-77).
SLOWED BY INJURIES The Hornets suffered through a plethora of injuries
this season while fighting to stay above .500....the injuries to Baron
Davis (sprained left ankle), Jamal Mashburn (arthroscopic surgery on
right knee 10/29 – 1-24, and patella femoral irritation of right knee
3/10 - present) and David Wesley (sprained left big toe) forced the trio
to miss a combined 99 games....the Hornets were 6-14 when any combination
of any two or all three players miss a game due to injury....other NBA
teams suffer a similar fate without their stars....Toronto was 0-9
without Vince Carter in the lineup and 3-13 without Jalen Rose this
season...the New Jersey Nets were 3-5 this season with Jason Kidd but
without Kenyon Martin and 3-3 with Martin, but without Kidd....Davis,
Mashburn and Wesley combined for the majority of the team's statistics,
contributing just under 58 points, 13 assists, almost 13 rebounds and
over four steals per game....listed below are the averages of the three
players and the various records the Hornets accumulated without one or
more of the trio:
PLAYER PTS AST REB STL
Davis 22.9 7.5 4.3 2.4
Mashburn 20.8 2.5 6.2 0.7
Wesley 14.0 2.9 2.2 1.2
TOTALS 57.7 12.9 12.7 4.3
HORNETS RECORD
5-10 without Davis 3-3 without Mashburn and Wesley
2-2 without all three players
5-7 without Davis and Mashburn 10-11 without Wesley
2-5 without Davis and Wesley 33-30 without Mashburn
BOUNCING BACK
Jamaal Magloire had just five points and six rebounds before being
ejected at the 5:00 mark of the third quarter in the Hornets' loss
3/16 at MIA....since then, Big Cat redeemed himself by closing out
the season strong over the last 15 Big Cat redeemed himself by
closing out the season with perhaps the best stretch of play of his
career...over the last 15 games, he scored in double figures 15 times,
recorded 13 double-doubles and eight 20/10 games...he also shot .846
(104-123) from the free throw line, hit the game-winning shot 3/23
vs. DET and put in a career-high 15-20 performance at the free throw
line 3/21 vs. TOR....Magloire was recognized for his efforts by being
named named Eastern Conference Player of the month for April after
averaging 21.7 points and 12.1 rebounds while leading the Hornets to
a 4-3 record and Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the period
ending 4/11 after averaging 23.0 points and 14.3 rebounds while
leading the Hornets to a 2-1 record:
MAGLOIRE PTS REB FG%
Last 15 Games 18.7 12.5 .484 (89-184)

DOUBLE DOWN
The Hornets had three double-double threats on the floor every night
in Baron Davis, PJ Brown and Jamaal Magloire...due to the prowess of
those players, the Hornets were one of only two teams with three
players in the top 30 for double-doubles (Dallas)....Brown had 24 on
the season (tied for 25th in the NBA), his high total as a Hornet...
Davis had 22 on the season (tied for 27th in the NBA)....Magloire led
the team with 45 double-doubles on the season (third in the NBA), a
career high (he led the team with 24 last year)....that number takes
on more of a significance considering Malgoire didn't register his
first double-double until the 12th game of the season...."Big Cat's"
45 double-doubles ties him for second on the all-time Hornets list for
double-doubles in a season....listed below are highest number of
double-doubles in a Hornets season:
DOUBLE-DOUBLES PLAYER YEAR
49 Larry Johnson 1992-93
45 Larry Johnson 1991-92
45 Jamaal Magloire 2003-04
THE REVOLVING DOOR
The Hornets were forced to use 17 different starting lineups this
season due to various injuries...unfortunately, the team's projected
starting lineup of Baron Davis, David Wesley, Jamal Mashburn, PJ Brown
and Jamaal Magloire was only been intact for two games (1-1) and didn't
start their first game together until 3/3 vs. CHI...the quintet of
Davis, Wesley, George Lynch, Brown and Magloire started 41 games this
season (23-18, .561), the most of any lineup.
BD & MASH
When Jamal Mashburn checked into the game at the 5:58 mark of
the first quarter 1/28 vs. MIL, it marked the first time since
5/2/03 (the Hornets' Game Six loss to PHI in the 2003 Playoffs)
that he and Baron Davis were on the court together....the site of
Davis and Mashburn breaking down defenses together has been
relatively rare in their three-and-a-half seasons together as
teammates....there have been 328 total regular season Hornets
games since the start of the 2000-01 season (through 4/10/04),
but BD and Mash have played together in just 182 of those games....
amazingly, in those three-and-a-half seasons, the duo were never
sidelined for the same game until January when Davis missed three
contests with a sprained left ankle....perhaps even more amazing
is that the Hornets are 77-69 (.527) in the 146 games in which one
(or both) of their two superstars is on the shelf and 101-81 (.555)
in the 182 games when both are healthy...to break it down further,
the Hornets are 55-46 (.545) without Mashburn in the lineup, 21-16
(.568) without Davis in the lineup and 5-7 (.417) with neither player
in the lineup.
D.W. TOPS 10,000 POINTS
David Wesley scored the 10,000th point of his career 3/25 at ATL....
Wesley connected on a three-pointer at the 11:00 mark of the first
quarter to push him over the milestone....when he did so, he became
just the third player in NBA history to reach the 10,000-point mark
after going undrafted (since the beginning of the common draft),
joining John Starks and Moses Malone (who was drafted by the Utah
Stars of the ABA)....of the 10,119 points that Wesley has scored in
his career, 7,309 have come as a Hornet....he joins seven other players
who have recorded their 10,000th point in a Hornets uniform (Elden
Campbell, Derrick Coleman, Dell Curry, Hersey Hawkins, Jamal Mashburn,
Robert Reid, Glen Rice).
FEAST OR FAMINE, PART ONE
The Hornets were 31-37 in their last 68 games....the difference in the
wins and losses was been dramatic, with the Hornets scoring below 87
points and shooting below 40 percent in defeat but averaging 97 points
while shooting over 44 percent in victory....the following shows the
difference in stats between the last 31 wins and the last 35 losses:
HORNETS PTS FG% REB STL
Last 31 Wins 96.7 .448 (1109-2473) 44.9 9.1
Last 37 Losses 86.8 .394 (1176-2985) 41.1 7.9
FEAST OR FAMINE, PART TWO
The Hornets were 24-34 over the last 58 games....much like the
difference in the wins and losses listed above, there was been a
dramatic difference in the wins and losses in terms of defense....
in the 34 losses, the Hornets have given up over 97 points per game
while allowing their opponents to shoot over 47 percent...in the 24
wins, the Hornets held their opponents to under 87 points and just
above 41 percent shooting:
OPPONENTS PTS FG% 3PT FG%
Last 34 Losses 97.8 .472 (1243-2636) .415 (190-458)
Last 24 Wins 86.4 .413 (781-1893) .292 (121-414)
EXPERIENCE COUNTS
With the offseason acquisition of veteran Darrell Armstrong (nine
NBA seasons) and the signing of Steve Smith (12 NBA seasons), the
Hornets have seven players with at least nine years of NBA
experience....Armstrong and Smith join Stacey Augmon (12 seasons),
PJ Brown (10 seasons), George Lynch (10 seasons), Jamal Mashburn
(10 seasons) and David Wesley (10 seasons) as the team's core of
veteran players....that gives the Hornets the most veteran players
in the league....New Jersey and the L.A. Lakers each have six
players with nine years or more in the league, while Golden State
and Sacramento have five each.
AMONG THE BEST
The Hornets have been one the best teams in the NBA, and certainly
in the Eastern Conference, in recent history...they hold the
seventh-best winning percentage in the NBA and the second-best winning
percentage in the Eastern Conference over the last seven years:
