Hornets' point guard hints he deserves better than third-team pick

The league announced it's All-NBA teams Sunday, and Hornets point
guard Baron Davis was a third-team selection.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and New Jersey Nets guard
Jason Kidd are first-team selections. Orlando guard Tracy McGrady
and Minnesota guard Sam Cassell made the second team.
Davis was the only Hornets' player to be selected. Joining Davis
on the third team are Indiana's Ron Artest, Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki,
Houston's Yao Ming and Milwaukee's Michael Redd.
"I'm happy, the hard work paid off," Davis said after Sunday's
practice. "But if you can tell me five point guards who are better
than me or even close, let me know."
Of the group ahead of Davis, Kidd and Cassell are point guards.
Davis was an All-Star selection this season and finished as the
Hornets' leading scorer with a 22.9 average in the regular season.
Davis missed 12 games because of a sprained left ankle.
Davis re-aggravated his injured left ankle in Saturday's 77-71
victory against the Miami Heat in Game 3. He also re-injured his
left knee and suffered a swollen right elbow. But none of those
injuries appear serious enough to keep him from starting in Game 4
Tuesday night at New Orleans Arena.
"He wants to be on the floor, and that's the bottom line," Hornets
coach Tim Floyd said. "When a guy wants to be on the floor, he's
going to play through pain. He wants to see this team do well."
Davis, though, did not participate in a short walk-through practice
Sunday at the Alario Center.
"I don't see too much explosion out of me," said Davis, referring to
the limitations caused by his injuries. "I just have to find different
angles to the basket, because I can't jump over anybody right now. I
have to play smart and still be aggressive at the same time."
On Saturday, Davis played 37 minutes and scored a team-high 21 points.
He had five assists and four steals.
"He's still capable of doing it all on both ends of the court," backup
guard Darrell Armstrong said.
TOUGH TO STOP: The Hornets held point guard Dwyane Wade to two points
and shooting guard Eddie Jones to five, and forward Lamar Odom was
5-of-18 from the field Saturday.
But the Hornets struggled against forward Caron Butler again. He
scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. After the first
three games in the series, Butler is the Heat's leading scorer and
rebounder, averaging 18 points and 9.7 rebounds.
"A lot of defensive attention is going to other guys, but there are
going to be guys to step up and contribute. And he's stepped up big
time," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "He's hitting his shots and
getting out in transition."
MUCH BETTER: The Hornets had 19 assists and nine turnovers in Game 3
after totaling 40 turnovers and 30 assists in the first two games
. . . . The Hornets allowed 36 fast-break points in the first two
games but limited the Heat to eight Saturday.
BACK AT HOME: The Heat returned to Miami after Saturday's game and
practiced Sunday at AmericanAirlines Arena.
TICKETS: Fans interested in purchasing tickets for Tuesday's game
can call (800) 462-2849 or make an order through the team's Web
site, hornets.com. The Hornets had an announced crowd of 14,251 for
Saturday's game in the 17,200-seat New Orleans Arena.
