"I can't put a finger on it," said Magloire, the Hornets' starting center. "I don't know what it is." "It's an aberration is what I think, basically," said Heat coach Stan Van Gundy. "We're just trying to do the best job on him we can possibly do. But I don't think what we've done has necessarily kept his numbers down." It has decreased his production. In four regular-season games against the Heat, Magloire averaged just six points and was ejected from the March 16 game. His season average was 13.6. Magloire averaged 21.7 points and 12.1 rebounds during the final seven games and was named the Eastern Conference's Player of the Month for April. In Game 1 Sunday night, he had 14 points and 11 rebounds, but missed nine of 14 shots and wasn't the dominant factor the Hornets need him to be, more so now that point guard Baron Davis has a sprained ankle. "We have to do a better job of getting the ball to him and establishing him more inside," Davis said. Not long after initially saying he didn't know how the Heat limited him, Magloire pointed out that he's been surrounded in the post by a "sagging" defense. "They double and triple-team me a lot to try to take the ball out of my hands," he said. Said former Heat forward P.J. Brown: "That was our philosophy when I was there. It's their philosophy still. That's probably never going to change. We knew that going into the game and didn't exploit it like we should have." While Brown and coach Tim Floyd credited undersized center Brian Grant for much of the Heat's success, Magloire replied: "It wouldn't be the same story if he was guarding me one-on-one. "They are set on taking me away," Magloire said. "What I have to do to become successful is just not worry about anything other than winning the basketball game. Rebounding comes first as a center. If I rebound offensively, I'm going to have opportunities at putting it back in the basket without them double- or triple-teaming me." AUGMON SPARKS Forward Stacy Augmon played more minutes (28) off the bench than starter George Lynch in Game 1 Sunday and finished with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. "I thought Stacy played really well," Floyd said. Augmon's success rarely translates into a win, though. The Hornets are 3-14 this season when he scores in double figures. HOBBLING HORNETS Davis, Magloire (knee tendinitis) and guard David Wesley (toe) will play despite injuries, but whether reserve point guard Darrell Armstrong (ankle) does is expected to be a game-time decision. Because of injuries, the Hornets practiced with eight men Monday and nine Tuesday, so "you're doing everything in skeletal," Floyd said. Steve Gorten can be reached at [email protected].
