Magloire honored by league

Before this week, Hornets center Jamaal Magloire had never received
Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors.
But that changed Monday when he was selected after averaging 23
points and grabbing an Eastern Conference-high 14.3 rebounds in
games last week against the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics and
Sacramento Kings.
"Darrell Armstrong and Shammond Williams really helped me get that
honor this week," Magloire said. "I thought they took their time and
penetrated all week. They made the defense collapse to give me
opportunities to score easy, and that's something I haven't been
doing in a long time with Baron (Davis) being out. But both of those
guys broke down the defense, and I made my free throws."
In the Hornets' 91-87 road victory against the Bucks, Magloire
scored 26 points on 7-of-11 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds. He
had 23 points and 17 rebounds and blocked two shots in his team's
89-80 victory against Boston at New Orleans Arena.
"Since the All-Star Game, he's played really well," Coach Tim Floyd
said.
On Monday, Magloire started slow. He made three of 10 shots in the
first half. But he finished strong with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
It was his 43rd double-double, which ranks fourth on the team's
all-time list.
STREAK ENDS: The Hornets' streak of 12 consecutive winning seasons
was snapped with their 101-97 loss to the Knicks on Monday at New
Orleans Arena. The best the Hornets can finish now is 41-41 entering
Wednesday's regular-season finale against the Washington Wizards.
HE'S BACK: Davis played for the first time since March 23.
He had missed the past nine games because of a sprained left ankle.
But Davis moved with no noticeable problems. Before Monday's game,
Floyd considered bringing Davis off the bench and limiting his minutes.
Davis started and played 27 minutes, scoring 14 points. He wore a
protective sleeve over his left leg.
INJURY UPDATE: Armstrong walked with crutches and missed his second
consecutive game after suffering a severe sprained right ankle Friday
night against Boston. Armstrong is not expected to play in the
regular-season finale against Washington. . . . Forward P.J. Brown
turned his right ankle with 5:50 remaining in the fourth quarter, but
he returned with 2:49 remaining.
GOOD EFFORT: Williams again showed his ability to easily break down a
defense with dribble penetration. He had a game-high 10 assists against
the Knicks, often looking for Magloire in the post. In Saturday's
victory against Milwaukee, Williams finished with a game-high 11
assists. In his first 15 games with the Hornets, Williams had 24
assists.
BIG GAME: Shooting guard David Wesley shot 6-of-7 for 17 points in the
first half. He hadn't scored 20 points or more since Jan. 7 against
Washington. He finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting
against the Knicks.
SELLOUT: It was the regular-season finale at New Orleans Arena, and a
sellout crowd of 17,619 attended. It was the Hornets' fifth sellout of
the season. They finished 41 home dates at the Arena averaging 14,332
to rank 28th among the league's 29 teams. The Hornets finished with a
25-16 record at home.
