Sarver opens up about Suns Sarver开讲 Craig Harris The Arizona Republic Mar. 2, 2006 12:00 AM In his 18 months as owner of the Phoenix Suns, Robert Sarver has not strayed from controversy. In fact, it seems to easily find him. He first created a stir among fans with his exuberant courtside behavior, and he took his share of heat for trading Joe Johnson to Atlanta during the off-season. This week, fans were abuzz with Sarver's handling of Bryan Colangelo, who left the franchise as general manager for a similar job with the Toronto Raptors. Sarver, chairman and chief executive of Western Alliance Bancorporation, made his fortunes in banking and real estate. The Tucson native, who now lives near San Diego with his wife and three sons, also is founder of Southwest Value Partners (SVP), a real estate investment company. In a wide-ranging interview Wednesday with The Republic, Sarver talked about Colangelo, his business philosophy and the future of Jerry Colangelo, Bryan's father and chairman of the Suns. He also took a few shots at the media. Here are excerpts from the interview. Q: How does running the Suns compare to your other businesses? A: "The thing about the Suns is it's emotional. It's more up and down. You have these games and when you win you are excited and when you lose, you are disappointed. But there is another game. In business, the emotion run a little smoother. It has its ups and downs, but in basketball there is so much excitement all the time. . . . "In the banking business, it's more quarter by quarter to see how we did. In basketball, you see how you did in two hours. Everything is sped up. The othe thing that is different is it's all in the public. In business, the pubic is concerned but in business you have shareholders and the public is concerned about results. You are evaluated and based on results. "In sports, every move that is made is evaluated and every step of the way people are making their judgments whether it's good or bad. The public viewing of everything in sports is much different than business. . . . "In sports, the (newspaper) columnists don't really want good results. In sports, a columnist or editorial writer will not tell your story. . . . That is different and I'm not accustomed to that." Q: Is this business different from others you have? A: "People say that, but I disagree. With the money the players make, I don't have anyone in the bank making $60 million. Of all the companies I own, I can say these employees are the highest paid. In that part, the business is goofy. . . . But, it's still a business, and it still requires organization and people. It still requires a balancing of the budget, and it requires having a product you can sell to your customers and to try to meet and exceed expectations. And, it requires relationships with customers. . . . If you look at (professional) football, some of the best businessmen have the most successful records of owning teams. And some of the worst businessmen have some of the worst records of owning teams. Guys who have done really well in business have done really well in sports. A lot of the principles work in all aspects of business." Q: What have been your biggest thrills with the Suns? A: "The day I bought the team. That was a big day for me. The day I went to Jerry's induction into the (Basketball) Hall of Fame. . . . I got goose bumps seeing all the history and tradition. And, I would say the last game we won in Dallas in the playoffs (last season) was just incredible!" Q: Disappointments? A: "When Amar?(Stoudemire) got hurt, and he wasn't going to be available for a large part of the season. Right now, one of my disappointments is we sat down 18 months ago and negotiated a transition and Jerry and I had a lot of optimism. We had this dream as to how everything would work out. With Bryan deciding to leave and work in Toronto that part of the plan is not going to happen. . . . I have some disappointment in that." Q: How do you handle criticism from the media and fans? A: "I have gotten used to it. Before I bought the team, I didn't really think about it. Before, I would just pick up the paper and see how owners would get grilled. I just didn't put myself in that situation. I was a little na鴳e. In the last 18 months, I have become accustomed to it. It wears on my wife and kids more than me. It doesn't really bother me. I get more concerned about the fans and making sure they are happy and getting the right product for what they deserve." Q: What's your relationship with fans? A: "I think it's very, very good. The ones who come up and talk to you like you. By and large, most of the fans appreciate the enthusiasm that I show for the team and the energy I have. . . . I like to interact with the fans. I spend time in the upper bowl (at U.S. Airways Center) and I like to see what isimportant with the fans. I try to be a real person and they can relate to that." Q: Which teams do you want to model? A: "The Spurs and Pistons. Those are two teams that have not only won titles, but they have shown sustained success. They have been good for a while." Q: Do they make money? A: "I don't know for sure. The league doesn't give you information team by team. But the way they have managed themselves financially has allowed them to be successful for a long period of time." Q: What's more important: being profitable or winning an NBA title? A: "Winning a title. But, it's tied together. My goal is not to take a profit and make a (financial) distribution. It's that I want to have the resources to have flexibility and to invest in the right pieces so we can be successful and win a title. No one buys a NBA team to live off the cash flow. If I wanted cash flow I would have bought something else. . . . No one will argue with the money I have spent. They may argue on how I spent it, but it's not that I haven't spent it. If you want a successful basketball team, you need to be on good financial ground. . . . A lot of teams spend a lot of money, but there is not a direct relation on the amount of money you spend to the success you will have on the court." Q: Does it bother you when people question how much you spend on the Suns? A: "Fans look at every single transaction as a transaction unto itself. But in reality, you have to look at everything as an overall game plan and an overall strategy. You have to have some methodology about it. You can't just look at each piece and evaluate it by itself. I don't hold it against people. It's their opinion. But, I have to look at all of the pieces together." Q: How long do you think fans will banter about the issue with Bryan Colangelo? A: "By the end of the week, it will pretty much be over. People will always be fond of him. He has his own legacy here. He is well liked, and he did very well. . . . The noise will go away, and we will be back to Phoenix Suns basketball." Q: What is Jerry Colangelo's future with the franchise? A: "It's up to him at this point. He's always welcome in the franchise and there is an important role for him. We talked about that 18 months ago, and not much has changed. The family tie (with Bryan) makes the situation more complicated, and you would have to ask him. . . . I would like him to be affiliated with the franchise." Q: Is your final payment for the franchise due next June? A: "Correct." A:是的。 Q: What's owed? A: "Around $65 million. The team had a lot of debt. . . . We assumed all the debt. In round numbers, it was around $200 million in debt and a couple hundredin equity. We put 65 percent up front, and we owed 35 percent at the end of three years." Q: Will the team make money this year? A: "I don't know. In all honesty, it will be close. We will be right around to break even." Q: Did the team make money last year? A: "A little bit. But what was made was reinvested in capital improvements in the arena. There have been no distributions to the partners. It's all used to pay down debt and to put back into the arena. Our payroll this year went up $10 million, and it will go up next year. We have a great business staff, and they have done an excellent job to increase that revenue, which allows the payroll to go up." A:赚一点。 Q: What will be the payroll next year? A: "I don't know at this point." Q: How are you different this season? A: "I am more reserved this year on the sidelines. I'm not more reserved in how I cheer, but I have become more professional, and I'm not doing stupid things. (Laugh). I would say I have matured a bit, but I'm not any less enthusiastic. I still clap and stand up and try to get the fans going. I am having as much fun this year as last. People confuse cheering and jumping at the game. I used to cheer for the University of Arizona Wildcats like that as a kid, and my dad cheered like that." Q: Do you keep negative articles about yourself? A: "I don't keep articles at all. . . . I read them. A lot of times, I look at the response from e-mails from fans. I really get more concerned about fans than I do the editorial. The editorials (writers) are writing to sell papers. The thing with the editorials and the two (Republic) guys who are killing me now - Bob Young and (Dan) Bickley - have never picked up the phone to ask me about the facts. It's just an editorial and it's meant to sell. . . . They are selling (papers). It's their job. I don't hold it against them." Q: Some critics have suggested you wanted to get rid of Bryan Colangelo in order to put your mark on the team. Any truth to that? A: "I wanted to keep Bryan, but Bryan wanted to leave. . . . Four weeks ago I had no clue of anything other than both Colangelos were going to be involved in this organization for a long, long time. There is zero, zero truth to that (Bryan Colangelo suggestion). But that's a good conspiracy, and it sells."
