One MIP on Another – Granger Discusses Paul George’s Development

As the media was allowed in the northeast entry way to the Bankers Life
Fieldhouse court, a surprising figure was standing in the lane, with the help
of a crutch under his left arm, in a white Pacers shirt.
Danny Granger, who is out for the season after having left knee surgery on
April 4th, ventured out of the locker room to observe practice. He is at the
Fieldhouse every day to receive treatment and to work out.
“It’s great to see Danny back around,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. “He
’s a big part of our culture. The guys really like him. He fits in with our
guys. There’s good camaraderie there.”
Granger hasn’t talked to the media much during the season because of his
nagging injury, and he hadn’t spoken at all in weeks. That changed Tuesday,
when requested to discuss teammate Paul George winning the NBA’s Most
Improved Player of the Year award, a feat he accomplished in 2009.
Ironically, it was Granger’s injury that allowed for 22-year-old’s outburst.
“I’m just so proud of him, honestly,” Granger said with a proud smile. “
How far he’s come from when we drafted him three years ago and everything he
’s done.
“He had a good year last year, the team had a good year, and he knew that it
was time to take the next step. He had the talent to be able to do that. I
think it was more so mentally figuring it out and then he worked so hard this
summer. I was with him for a lot of it, I saw the strides that he was making
and it’s no surprise that he accomplished what he did this year.”
Having won the award four seasons ago, Granger knows the significance of the
award and what it can do for a player’s career moving forward.
“I remember one of my uncles, who wasn’t really too familiar with
basketball, he called me and said ‘Does that mean you were really bad last
year?’ I said, ‘No, it really doesn’t work that way.’ But when you win
that award, I think it gives you recognition that the rest of the league took
notice of what you did and how hard you did work. It’s a big accomplishment.
”
Even though Granger was limited to 74 minutes spanning five games this
season, George said that Granger has stayed in his ear and provided guidance.
What the first time All-Star does next is completely up to him.
“I think with his ability to defend, his ability to score, and his ability
to distribute the ball – he’s really a multi-faceted player and he can
really attack the game in so many different areas – I really think the sky’
s the limit,” said Granger.
With or without Granger for the duration of the season, Vogel believes that
George was “ready to explode” and have a breakout season. “He may have
scored as much, or he may have had more assists with a guy like Danny out
there alongside him,” Vogel said Tuesday. “I think it would have been a
similar type of growth.”
Granger and George’s relationship has another unique twist in that Granger
gave him his full support when then team president Larry Bird called and
asked for his opinion. George had impressed Granger when they worked out,
along with a few others, in L.A.
“You better draft him,” Granger told Bird. “Just from what I saw from the
workouts, I knew he was special.”
Granger is under contract for one more season, worth about $14.2 million. It’
s his hope that he’ll be able to return to the court for training camp come
October, and play with next to George and other members of the Central
Division Champs.
“Hopefully I’ll be ready, and I think I will be. I am looking forward to it.
”
