Bird admits incidents take toll
Indiana Pacers president Larry Bird sat down with The Indianapolis Star on
Friday for a wide-ranging interview in which he discussed the personal impact
of the recent off-court incidents involving his players, why it's "a tough
reach" to think this team can win the NBA championship, and the expanded role
he'll have to try to improve the franchise.
Q: What have these past few years, since the brawl at Detroit in 2004,been
like for you personally?
A: It's very gut-wrenching. It hurts.
The incident (involving Stephen Jackson outside a strip club) just tore me
up. I couldn't believe it when I was told that morning. It still hurts. The
incident here (involving Jamaal Tinsley and Marquis Daniels inside another
club), I don't know. I wasn't there, I don't know what happened. Obviously
they were charged. I'm very disappointed in that. But they'll go to a court
of law and hopefully they're innocent.
Q: If they are found innocent, does everybody get a blank slate and start over?
Or does this put Tinsley in a situation like Stephen Jackson was, where you
might have to move him just because of public opinion?
A: I've said it over and over: If we can make our team better, we would trade
anyone. It's a business. We're trying to get to a point we can win a
championship. But to say we're going to get rid of Jamaal just to get rid
of Jamaal, no.
The problem is, Jamaal's not out there (in the community) I'm around Jamaal
all the time. I like Jamaal. I think he's a stand-up guy. But he's not
perceived that way because the public doesn't know him.
That's one of the problems you have when you have professional athletes,
because they tend to isolate themselves when they go out. Maybe they feel
like they're targets or whatever.
This has been a very tough situation, not only for me but for Donnie (Walsh)
and the organization. It's something we have to deal with. But it's new to
all of us. I've never been in any situations like this. I don't like what's
happened. But I know what our fans want. I grew up in Indiana, I know what
kind of basketball should be played. And that's what we're trying to do.
Q: What has Jamaal told you face-to-face about that night?
A: He says he's innocent. I wasn't there, I don't know. He's an employee of
ours. We will support him within our group here. And hopefully he's innocent
. But the damage has been done. The perception is that he's guilty. It's a
difficult situation for the organization.
Q: Given all the headaches you've had recently, why are you still doing this?
You could be playing golf.
A: (laughs) Because I'm sick.
I don't know; it's in my blood. And I'm competitive. I don't know. I played,
I coached . . . I didn't want no part of that coaching. But the way I did it
, I managed the team and Rick (Carlisle) did the Xs and Os. I loved the
defense part of it. I had one of the best (assistants), Dick Harter. I
couldn't believe the stuff he got out of these guys. But I managed the team
and me and Dick did the defense. Every once in a while I'd look at Rick's
offense and say, 'You've got too many plays. Keep it simple. And run the
stuff we ran in Boston.' We weren't brain surgeons, but we knew how to run
the plays.
Dick Harter,I couldn't believe the stuff he got out of these guys.
It was very interesting to me when I was coaching, how you manage your team.
That's very important in this league. This day and age, somebody better be
managing your players. And you better touch every one of them every day.
Why'd I do this? I just think it's in my blood. . . . And the craving for
a championship . . . It's the drive that I want to get back there one more
time.
Q: How do you see your team now and the possibilities for this season?
A: I like everything about our team but our defense right now. We can't stop
anybody from driving into the paint. . . Defensively, I just don't like
where we're at. To win in the playoffs, you have to be a good defensive team.
Q: You guys gave support to Carlisle with a contract extension Can you evaluate
his performance?
A: We've made so many changes. I know Rick's a good coach. Offensively, you're
not going to find anybody better. Until we win big, people might question
his style.
Q: How close are you to winning a championship?
A: Our defense has to be better, and we're not there. Do we have enough players
right now? If we play well, we can do some things in the playoffs that might
surprise some people. But to win the whole thing, I don't know. That's a
tough reach right now.
Q: What's your vision for the team? Will you have more of an opportunity
starting next year to put your imprint on it? (CEO Donnie Walsh said
Thursday if he returns next year it, will be in a reduced role.)
A: I hope so, and that's the plan. I've been under Donnie for four years now.
I've learned a lot. Obviously there's a lot more I can learn.
I want to play Indiana basketball. I've seen it played. I see other teams
playing it. I think you need a point guard who can defend and keep the ball
moving and when he's open, hit shots. That takes a lot of pressure off your
inside people. I like the way Rick runs his offense, but you still have to
have the big guy down the middle who can block the lane and take the pressure
off when you need a basket.
That's what I'm hoping I can get to. . . . Going forward, I just want to get
the type of players in here that not only I like to watch play but our fans
like to watch play. And I think I know how to do that.
Q: With you having more control, how will the decision-making process be
altered?
A: If we make a big trade, we have to take it to our owners. Donnie will still
be here and he'll still be in charge. We'll still run things by him. But now
all the calls will go to one person. Before it was split up. All the younger
guys (other teams' personnel directors) would call me, all the older guys
would call Donnie. That's fine, but really you need one guy doing it. I
think our fans have to know who's doing it. Our players have to know. Donnie
will still be involved. He'll still give me information.
I'm looking forward to it. That's why I've done this. The main reason I'm
doing this, in college I made it to the (NCAA) finals and didn't win it, and
as a coach (with the Pacers) we made it to the Finals and didn't make it. I
want to win something for Indiana, just not be runner-up all the time. The
key for me is getting there again and winning this thing.
Q: How do you know when to go for it and when to blow it up?
A: Sometime you are stuck in the middle. But I'd rather be in the playoffs. I
talked to (Boston Celtics general manager) Danny Ainge the other day and he
said, 'Don't ever get in this situation.' When you lose 16, 17 straight games
, it gets tough and mentally it breaks you down. He knows he has some young
talent there and if he's able to get (Greg) Oden or (Kevin) Durant in the
draft, that changes your whole world. We know that. But I think we've got to
make sure we make the right moves, and get the right free agents.
Danny Ainge
Q: Did watching the Colts celebration make you think, I want that to be me
again?
A: Oh, no question. I loved it. I was so happy for Bill (Polian) and Jim
(Irsay) and Peyton (Manning) and some of the guys I know, because I know
how hard it is to win those things. It's not easy. One injury throughout the
year can destroy all of it. I was very happy for them.
I grew up in Boston (as athlete). One year we had three teams in the final.
The more the merrier. I always loved that. That's what it's all about. Here if
we can ever get a situation where both teams can get there, that would be so
awesome for the city.
Q: What parts of this job do you actually enjoy? Where does the pleasure come
from?
A: The games. The wins. It's the same whether you're playing, coaching or
whatever. When you win a game, you feel like you survived until the next one
. It's survival. That's what it is.
