Indiana Pacers point guard Sarunas Jasikevicius said he misses Israel,
where he starred for two seasons, but even after an up-and-down rookie season,
he wants to stay in the NBA.
"I'm missing Maccabi Tel Aviv (his previous team in Israel)," Jasikevicius
told the Web site Sport5.co.il. "But even though I love Maccabi very much,
my place is here."
Jasikevicius, 30, came to the NBA last season after starring in Europe for
several seasons. He started the season as the No. 2 point guard behind
Jamaal Tinsley and showed why team president Larry Bird had been after him
for several seasons. Jasikevicius played in the Rookie Challenge during
All-Star weekend in Houston, but hit a wall soon after.
He shot 34 percent, including 33 percent on 3-pointers, in the final two
months of the season. He was demoted to third string behind Tinsley and
Anthony Johnson and ended the season averaging 7.3 points and 3.0 assists
in 75 games.
Jasikevicius said he is glad he went to the NBA but called this season
"a disappointment."
"When I came into the situation here, I thought things will be different,
" Jasikevicius said. "Apparently, things went in the wrong way. I was very
glad with my performance at the season's first 50 games. . . . Toward
the end of this season, strange things happened here. Things changed.
I talked a couple of times to coach (Rick) Carlisle, but he didn't tell me
anything. But he's the coach, and he's the one making the decisions.
"It's normal to hear people talking about changes. There are some free agents
and I'm sure that some changes will be made."
Jasikevicius doesn't expect to be traded but has a plan just in case.
"I want to stay here, if it will be in the Pacers or any other NBA team,"
he said.
