As you suggest, this really is two very different questions. I'll tackle the second one first because it's the easiest. Based on what he has meant to the team in his brief time here, Stojakovic should evolve into the team MVP by the end of the season. He stepped right into a tumultuous situation and not only calmed everything down in the locker room, he fit in immediately and began producing at an All-Star level on the floor. He's giving every indication of being a glue player, a guy who helps hold everyone and everything together. They've also enjoyed a remarkable advantage of 9.2 rebounds per game over their opponents. But to Carlisle, they are gold. Rebounds translate into possessions. The more rebounds a team gathers, the more possessions it will have, which increases the number of opportunities to score. If the playoff picture stayed the same, and since Detroit is so far ahead, it is likely that the Pacers would end up between the 4-6 seeds in the East. My question is, with the recent success against the New Jersey Nets and the way the Pacers match up with Philadelphia, what would be the best seed for the Pacers? My question concerns how the Pacers will play when Jermaine O'Neal returns to the lineup. Can he be utilized in a way similar to how Amare Stoudamire was used in Phoenix last year? Amare has a bevy of post moves and is effective in the post, just like J.O., but in Phoenix's up-tempo offense he scored a ton of points as the trailer on the fast break and by pushing the pace he was the recipient of easier shots. Can't the Pacers try to emulate that style? It might lessen some of the wear and tear on his body. I think that J.O. is built more for speed than pounding it out in the post. This is not only the question of the day, it just might be the question of the month. Or maybe even the year. It seems like everybody in Pacers Nation is worried that O'Neal's return will somehow undo all of the good that has been done in the weeks since Peja Stojakovic was acquired. O'Neal himself has said, repeatedly, that he'd rather play a more up-tempo style because of the attributes you mention. He runs exceptionally well, is quick on his feet and obviously can finish with either hand. A quicker pace, with more cutting and less standing, also tends to generate more easy baskets. In the last six games, he has averaged just 10 points on 29 percent shooting overall and has gone 3-of-21 from the 3-point line. For better or worse, however, he's been the true warrior, putting on the uniform every game, no matter how he feels, and giving whatever he has to offer. The same competitive fire that sometimes pushes Jackson beyond emotional limits also enables him to push beyond physical limits. As a reserve, he gives the Pacers a huge advantage because he brings the ability to change a game from the bench.
