Fittingly, J.J. has a unique appreciation of time – and he realizes that his is running out as a player. J.J's late-blooming career began in Orlando in 2006 as the Magic's No. 11 draft pick out of Duke. It will reach another crossroads next summer when his contract expires with the L.A. Clippers, who were in town to face the Magic on Wednesday night. Seriously, where did the time go? Redick will turn 33 in June, just before the green flag drops on another free-agent gold rush. He said his focus is on the here and now. But it will be his last chance to land a big deal with the Clippers -- or some other team. Asked if he would consider returning to the Magic, Redick told me, "Come back to Orlando? I definitely wouldn't rule it out, for sure. Chelsea (J.J's wife) and I have a lot of great memories here." The Magic would be lucky to have him (rumor is, they could use a shooter), but why come back to a struggling team? Besides, GM Rob Hennigan would have to eat considerable crow for that to happen. J.J.'s stay with the Magic lasted six-plus seasons. Then everything changed when Dwight Howard forced his way out in 2012. Determined to create cap room and rebuild through the lottery, Hennigan traded Redick to Milwaukee for Tobias Harris, once seen as a piece in a short-lived youth movement. Redick was projected as a back-up here and made just 52 starts. He has instead turned himself into a complete player and a vital cog with the Clippers. It certainly helps to be surrounded by Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, but Redick has started 212 of 213 games for Doc Rivers. He averaged 16.3 points last season and led the league in 3-point shooting, constantly on the move searching for shots. "He's just is an offense onto himself and in some ways, he's a defense, as crazy as that sounds," Rivers said. "A good scorer guarding J.J. by the fourth quarter, that good scorer is not the same. J.J. runs like no other." J.J. overcame his first two shaky seasons with relentless work, a lesson plan Mario Hezonja should follow. "I'm cognizant and appreciative of the entire journey," Redick said. "I guess when you're drafted you don't really know what to expect and then you kind of get punched in the mouth a bit…It made me get better and realize how much I love playing. "Actually, I was thinking today… I was wondering in that second year if I might be in Russia a year from now," he laughed. Redick would have provided Orlando with terrific shooting, heady play and admirable work ethic. For a franchise that covets such a package, it would seem that J.J. checked all the boxes. "I was under that impression, too," he said, adding, "I'm not bitter. I've moved on." The Magic moved on from Redick and his pristine jump-shot. He had a modest contract at roughly $6.5 million per. The Bucks signed him to relatively the same modest deal (four years, $27 million) before trading him to L.A. in the summer of 2013. Redick didn't realize it then, but Hennigan did him a favor. The Magic sent him on a path to a big-market contender, joining a hauntingly long list of alumni who made good. Redick wants to play four more years, giving him a tidy 15-year career that survived a failed launch in Orlando. He can still remember hearing fans chant his name a la Rudy, imploring Stan Van Gundy to put him in. "Year 11," Redick said, shaking his head. "And I'm still here for some reason." Just not here in Orlando, unfortunately. As a watch-collector like J.J.
