Perhaps only his current team, the Knicks, will dole out that kind of money for the 11-year vet, who turns 30 in May. Miami's Big 3 fall into this category, too, this summer. A maximum salary for a player with 6 or fewer years of experience is either $9,000,000 or 25 percent of the total salary cap. For a player with 7–9 years of experience, the maximum is $11,000,000 or 30 percent of the cap. The Magic can offer a free agent a deal in either of these ranges this offseason, and more next season. Younger players such as Greg Monroe and Lance Stephenson are appealing. But they are restricted free agents, meaning their teams can match any offer. It is why GM Rob Hennigan is aiming to the summer of 2015, when he has roughly $36 million in the coffers. Presumably, the perfect target would be Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Love. LaMarcus Aldridge and Rajon Rondo are other stars who could be on the market. Klay Thompson, Reggie Jackson and Kawhi Leonard are restricted. Stars don't become available often and you need one — preferably two — to contend. Hennigan talks about building for a long run, but he says the lottery isn't the only vehicle. Orlando's history suggests it doesn't dawdle: The Magic have made the playoffs 14 of the last 21 seasons, with three years their longest stretch without making the postseason. Fishing for free-agent stars is uncharted waters for Hennigan. The Magic once signed Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady (via sign-and-trade). Their last big free-agent acquisition was in 2007 (Rashard Lewis via sign-and-trade). They can pitch the old stand-bys: weather and no state income tax. But they also will have to sell a future to any star. Victor Oladipo, Arron Afflalo and Nik Vucevic are nice pieces, and the Magic can add a college stud, perhaps Jabari Parker.
