Orlando Magic plan to inquire about free agent LeBron James This is the calm before the barnstorm. Before the Orlando Magic make that obligatory recruiting call to the ringmaster of the upcoming free-agent circus, LeBron James — yes, they plan to call The King — they have a little matter of wading through Thursday night's NBA draft. The Magic have about as much chance of scoring big with James as they do with the 29th pick in the first round, but this often is a mortgaged contender's lot in life. These things are always in play," said Smith, who maintains the club will keep the selection unless he's hit by a meteor, basically. Orlando also owns the 59th pick in the second round. The Magic again will be diving into the punitive luxury tax, but Smith doesn't seem too concerned that first-round picks — unlike second-rounders — are handed guaranteed contracts (the first two years). It's cheap labor by NBA standards. Florida State's Toney Douglas, last year's No. 29 choice by the New York Knicks, made $996,000 his rookie season and will earn just over a mil this coming season. "You have to fill out your roster," Smith said. The Magic's roster indeed needs some filling out, especially at point guard. Jameer Nelson's backups, Jason Williams and Anthony Johnson, are aging free agents. Williams hasn't ruled out returning even as the third point guard/mentor, but the Magic need to get younger and, ahem, taller. Smith isn't committed to drafting a trainee, adding, "I think you always take the best guy available. I don't think you can go in saying 'point guard' and pass on a better guy." Interestingly, of the six players who worked out for the Magic on Monday, only Greivis Vasquez, 6 feet 6, formerly of Maryland, is a true point guard. Vasquez has size, but isn't a great on-the-ball defender, which is what the Magic desperately need. That doesn't mean Smith hasn't had his eye on, say, point guards Terrico White and Mikhail Torrance, both 6-5. As you might expect in this late crapshoot, mock drafts are all over the board with the Magic at 29, from shooting guard James Anderson (Sports Illustrated) to small forward Quincy Pondexter (Hoopsworld) to power forward Gani Lawai (NBAdraftnet) to White (Yahoo! Sports). Three CBSsportsline.com writers all had different selections for the Magic — and they named none of the aforementioned players. "You just don't know what's going to happen in the first 28 picks," Smith said. "I think it's a pretty good draft and I feel we can get a player at 29." The Magic also could be looking for help at shooting guard (if they can't re-sign J.J. Redick) and small forward (if Matt Barnes finds greener pastures), although those needs might better be addressed in the free-agent market or through trades. While Washington Wizards-bound John Wall is the most coveted player in what appears to be a draft lacking sizzle, the real drama begins July 1, when the green flag drops on free agency. James is the big fish in a well-stocked pond. The Magic can't acquire any of the marquee players in this star-studded class unless they strike gold in a sign-and-trade or a player takes less to join Dwight Howard and a contender. For instance, Orlando has available the mid-level exception (which starts at $5.5 million) to entice LeBron (and Redick wants all or most of that). Asked if the Magic would be placing a call to LeBron on July 1, Smith laughed. He can't utter the L-word for fear of a tampering charge, but it's clear the Magic will reach out to King James.
