Magic Draft Daniel Orton: A Quick Reaction The Magic selected Daniel Orton with the 29th pick in the NBA Draft on Thursday night, becoming the fifth Kentucky player picked in the first round. Orton was quite a stunning pick for Orlando. He was projected to go in the middle of the first round and fell to the Magic on a talent perspective. With Greivis Vazquez off the board at No. 28, Orlando lost the opportunity to draft the combo wing/point guard the team probably wanted. But Orton was the best .talent remaining on the board. His body of work (no joke intended... yet)is not very strong. He averaged only 3.4 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game off the bench for Kentucky. Out of the Wildcats' celebrated freshman class, he was by far the weakest. His defensive work was pretty solid though. He was second on the team in blocked shots and he did a good job with three rebounds in 13 minutes per game. Yes, you would like to see a lot more from him. This pick was a big gamble. Orton has had his weight problems and his attitude problems in his one year at Kentucky. He is a power forward too, so it is unclear where he might fit in with Orlando as it is currently set up. It also does not make you feel good that he missed his entire senior year with a knee injury. That was only two years ago.
