Ryan Anderson Fitting In Perfectly With Magic

In one hour, Ryan Anderson will make his Orlando Magic debut. Sitting with
his back to his locker, he takes everything in. The reporters filing in and
out and of the room, the Miami Heat game film playing on the big screen
behind him, and the keys for the game written across the whiteboard. After
sitting out in Orlando's preseason debut against the Dallas Mavericks on
Monday, Anderson knows he'll see the court tonight and is ready to make a
lasting first impression.
Fast forward three hours and he has done just that. Magic fans left the Amway
Arena on Wednesday night with a better understanding of Ryan Anderson's game
and saw just how nicely he fits in with the team as he tallied a team high 16
points and 5 rebounds in twenty-four minutes.

Unlike Orlando's other acquisitions, Anderson is the type of player who is
built for this offense. Vince Carter, Brandon Bass, and Jason Williams are
all trying to adjust to Orlando's system and vice versa. In their case
something has to change, either their style of play or the team's. With
Anderson, this isn't an issue. He spreads the floor, knocks down open shots,
and creates match-up problems which makes him very valuable to the team.

When the Magic traded for Vince Carter and Anderson over the summer, some
looked at the twenty-one year old as a throw-in to the deal. However, Orlando
had Anderson rated above Courtney Lee in the 2008 Draft and were prepared to
take the big man until he was selected by New Jersey at twenty-one, just one
pick ahead of the Magic. With the Nets last season, Anderson averaged 7.4
points and 4.7 rebounds in just under twenty minutes of action but he feels
he can contribute even more playing in this system.

Not only does he jell well with the team's style, he's also a fit in the
Magic locker room. Mocking the Snickers' commercial starring Orlando's
assistant coach Patrick Ewing, Anderson's teammates are constantly greeting
the forward with the phrase, "What's up, Ryan?"

While Anderson is still trying to get situated, his teammates are already
noticing what he brings to their offense. "Being around Ryan, I could tell he
was excited and nervous," said Vince Carter. "I was happy for him to come out
and play like he did tonight. He did a lot of good things. He's an asset to
this team. He stretches the floor, he rebounds the ball, he's just
relentless. He's in a great situation and brings a different look to our
team."

Brandon Bass, Orlando's other newly acquired power forward, sees the benefit
of sharing minutes with Anderson.

"Ryan is more of a shooter and I'm more of a "fifteen foot and in" kind of
guy and we compliment each other very well," said Bass.

Stan Van Gundy has also noticed how well the duo, which combined for 27
points on Wednesday, work together.
"I thought they played well, both of them. I think they're both good players
and we give you two totally different looks. Brandon's in there banging
around inside and then we go to the bench and Ryan's stretching the floor,"
he says.

floor, especially if he happens to be 6' 10.

When asked if he saw any similarities between Anderson and the six-foot-ten
Rashard Lewis, Dwight Howard drew up a better comparison.

"I call him the new Pat Garrity. He plays just like him, he shoots just like
him, he's hard-nosed, he battles in the paint, and he can drive and pitch.

Garrity made a living in this league by drilling three pointers and

even better fit for the Magic.
