Brandon Bass won't mind doing the dirty work for the Orlando Magic
Signee gives team another physical inside presence
For three consecutive weeks this summer, the first thing Brandon Bass saw in
the morning and the last thing he saw at night was a dry-erase board that
included messages written in red marker.
"REBOUND." "RUN THE FLOOR." "DEFEND."

Fresh off of signing a free-agent deal to join the Orlando Magic, Bass stayed
several weeks at the New Orleans home of his mentor and former youth
basketball coach, Dannton Jackson, to prepare for the upcoming season.

Jackson already had written Bass' modest NBA career statistics on the board.

Exactly who Bass is — and why the Magic signed him to a four-year, $18
million contract that includes a player option for the 2012-13 season — will
start coming into focus when the Magic open their preseason Monday night
against Bass' former team, the Dallas Mavericks.

New teammates and coaches already rave about the 24-year-old power forward's

Bass should add a dimension to the Magic that the team didn't have last
season.

The Magic needed another physical inside presence to complement Dwight
Howard. The team finished 27th in the NBA last season in offensive rebounds
per game. That low number can be traced, in part, to the team's style of
spreading the floor. But Bass will play closer to the basket, and he might
prompt Coach Stan Van Gundy to shift Rashard Lewis to his natural position of
small forward.

physical presence," Van Gundy said of Bass. "I think he's going to help us on
the boards. He's going to help us run on the court. He's going to raise all

Bass closed practice Saturday by lifting weights. He was the last guy to

heart attack when he was 10 years old. Bass and his younger siblings — a
brother, Chris, and a sister, Daisha — eventually moved in with their mom's
sister, Estelle Bass, and her five children in Baton Rouge.

Young Jeezy, Bass has written and recorded lyrics to about 30 rap songs. But
he has no plans to release any of them; they're just for himself and his
family.
