Magic GM Otis Smith explains the reasons behind Orlando's offseason personnel
moves

The Orlando Magic return to work on Tuesday, 108 days after their surprise
run ended in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Training
camp will resemble more of a meet-and-greet than a reunion, however.

Despite making their first Finals appearance since 1995, the Magic boldly
remade their roster this summer, bringing in five new players. The biggest
change was letting go of Hedo Turkoglu and trading for Vince Carter.

General Manager Otis Smith considers the moves — the Magic could wind up
with two new starters — to be part of a process of building a perennial
contender.

In a question-and-answer session with the Sentinel's Brian Schmitz, Smith
also explains why the timing is now right to acquire Carter and why trading
Marcin Gortat doesn't make sense — yet.

Q: Otis, you've employed an unusual strategy: Reach the Finals and then tear
up your team. What's up with that?
A: You can punt around and say our goal is to get back to the Finals, but we
want to win championships. And we want to win a championship today. The
pieces we added were the pieces we thought we needed to add to win.
I thought it would be virtually impossible to bring back 10 guys and get back
to the Finals. It will be equally as difficult to even bring back different
guys and win a championship. So the task is equally as great.
问︰Otis，你采取了一个不寻常的策略︰拆散了已经打进总冠军赛的阵容。这是怎麽回事
？
答︰你大可去炫耀我们已打进总冠军赛、然後说我们的目标是重返冠军赛，但事实是我们

的元素。我觉得你想带回每个人重返总冠军战是不可能的。这将是同样的困难，去带领不
同球员重返总冠军。但这是同样伟大的任务。
Q: You put last season in the rearview mirror rather quickly.
A: The team had some success, but it was not our ultimate goal. So it's hard
for me to say, 'I'm ecstatic.' That's not who I am.
I thought last year we were a team that showed great resolve and were a team
of destiny that kind of fell apart in the Finals.
问︰你可以简短快速回顾一下上个赛季吗？
答︰这支球队取得了一些成功，但那并非我们的终极目标。所以我很难说“我很高兴”

Q: You've been a 3-point shooting club that was hurt by the Lakers' size and
length in the Finals. Have the changes made you a sounder playoff team?
A: We're more versatile in that we can play different ways. We couldn't
really play big and strong, but I think Brandon [Bass] gives us a different
look. Ryan [Anderson] gives us a different look. What we'll look like is a
totally different team at different times.
It's not the same team , but we're always going to play similar because
Dwight [Howard] is still our big guy in the middle. He still draws double
teams and we'll still encourage guys to take the 3.
问︰你们是支三分大队，但在总冠军赛却被湖人的高大阵容所痛击。你有做任何能让球队
在季後赛表现更好的改变吗？

Q: Obviously, the big move was Vince in, Turk out. Was it more of a financial
matter not to re-sign Turk?
A: It all came down to getting better. I don't think it came down to
financial for us. Ownership said do whatever it takes to put a winner on the
floor. I think we did that.
问︰很明显的最大改变是VC的到来和火枪兵的出走，没能签下火枪兵是否是财政上的问题
？
答︰我觉得一切都越来越好啊，这并非财政上的问题。事实上，老板跟我说，你想干麻就

Q: Other than an all-star resume, what does Carter give you that Turk did
not?
A: I thought my core guys needed to be able to walk into a gym and see Vince
Carter shooting at the other end and say, 'Now we got help. Now we got a guy
who can do it.' I thought that was as big for their psyches as anything else.
问︰除了全明星的经历外，Carter带来了什麽火枪兵做不到的事？

Q: Two summers ago, Vince was a free agent as was Rashard Lewis. Why not sign
Vince then?
A: Rashard and Vince were on the board at the same time. I do think the
timing is right now for Vince. Timing is everything with every player. Vince
is a different person at 32 than he was at 30. Just as Dwight is a different
person now than he was at 21. Vince is at a place in his career. He's been
through all the superstar stuff and he just wants to win.
问︰两年前的夏天VC跟Lewis一样是自由球员，为何你那时不签下VC？
答︰那时Lewis跟VC的确都是自由球员，但是那时我认为时机不对。我考虑的一切就是适
合签下该球员的时机。32岁的VC跟30岁的VC是不一样的，就像魔兽跟两年前也已经不一样
了。VC正在生涯的颠峰，他有了超级巨星的潜质并且他饥渴於胜利。
Q: You have your core group with Dwight, Rashard and a now healthy Jameer
Nelson. You also, surprisingly, decided that Gortat would be part of that
group, even though he hardly plays behind Dwight. Don't you at some point
trade Gortat for another piece to get out from under his contract?
A: I know maybe on paper, and in theory, it makes sense. That's the history
of the league, but we're trying to build a championship team and March is
part of that. You'd only trade him because you're looking to get better or
you have a need; you don't trade him because you are looking to get out from
under the money.
We think with Marcin it's like, 'Break glass in case of emergency.' We didn't
know if we needed a Rafer Alston last year, but we had a need [after Nelson's
injury] and we were able to fill a need [with a trade].
问︰再有了魔兽、两千万还有健康的尼二婶作为核心後，令人意外的又签下锅贴。你知道
，作为魔兽的替补上场时间将会很少。你是否是在盘算着拿他去做交易呢？
答︰我知道理论上这说的通，历史上都是这样的。但是我们正再打造一支冠军队，而锅贴
是将是这支球队的一份子。只有在能让队伍变的更好的情况下、或者需要的时候，我才会
考虑交易他。我不会做没有意义的交换。
我们认为锅贴是重要的备胎，就像是去年我不知道我们是否需要Alston；但在Nelson受伤
後，我知道我们需要。并且我们把它交易过来了。
Q: Lewis will miss the first 10 games because of his suspension. How will
that affect a team trying to put together new pieces?
A: I think it's a blessing. Sometimes there's a silver lining. You get to see
guys play extended minutes who normally would not.
问︰两千万前十场比赛将被禁赛，这会对这支新的球队造成什麽影响？
