'The Experts' are starting to recognize the progress that has been made as well, as evident with the recent ESPN blogger dedicating a large portion of his post to the Orioles young players and the possiblity that the Orioles could replicate the ascension made by the Rays in 2008. This bit written on the Orioles by Buster Olney is the most anyone has written about them at ESPN since Cal Ripken retired. So what is MacPhail planning to do to continue the progress? He has outlined his offseason wish list which includes a late inning bullpen arm, a first baseman, a third baseman, and a veteran starter to round out the rotation. Here's a list of possiblities for each need. First base- Optimal: Trade for Adrian Gonzalez This probably won't happen. The Orioles would have to give up one of their young starters (Bergesen, Matusz, Tillman) and one of their position prospects. MacPhail is unlikely to do this, but I suspect he'll make some calls none the less. Likely: Hank Blalock, Nick Johnson. My guess here is Blalock. Johnson is a Type B free agent so MacPhail would have to give up a second round draft pick. The other knock on Johnson is that he doesn't provide the power that the Orioles are looking for at first base. Third Base- Optimal: Miguel Tejada Tejada has said he's willing to consider the move to third and could be a great one year stop gap until Josh Bell is ready to take over. I don't think this is likely because the Astros have shown intent on resigning Miggy and he has expressed the desire to stay. Likely: Ty Wigginton The free agent options at third are pretty weak. Pedro Feliz looks like a possibility, but he's likely to favor a contender. Adrian Beltre, Mark DeRosa, and Chone Figgins are likely to be too expensive. Once you get beyond those four, sticking with Wigginton seems like the best option. Plus his contract conveniently ends after this season, perfect timing as Josh Bell projects to be ready for 2011. Starting Pitcher- Optimal: Erik Bedard, Aroldis Chapman Taking injuries out of the equation, Bedard has been all star caliber. (5-3, 2.82 with Seattle last season) He has expressed the desire for a short term deal to rebuild his free agency stock. This is exactly what the Orioles are looking for; short term, inexpensive. Chapman is wishful thinking. I'm going to assume that the likes of Boston and New York will outbid the Orioles for a prospect as highly thought of as Chapman. Likely: Someone with little to no impact What I mean is someone like Livan Hernandez, Braden Looper, Doug Davis, or whoever else gets desperate and is willing to take a one or two year deal. Mark Hendrickson could reprise his role here as well. Closer- Optimal: Mike Gonzalez Gonzalez could be the Orioles closer for the next couple seasons if they are able to sign him. I doubt this will happen though as Gonzalez is likely to be pricey, and he is a Type A guy which would mean the Orioles would have to give up a first round pick if Atlanta offers arbitration. Likely: Koji Uehara Uehara burned out pretty early last year as a starter. He spent his final season in Japan as a closer and was effective in this role, and I expect the Orioles to try him out the in the spring.
