"We've discussed it the past few days, and his last outing in Seattle [in which he allowed two home runs in an inning for a blown save] finalized it," manager Dave Trembley said. "We all know the numbers. We thought we had to try to get someone who can be more effective." Left-hander Alberto Castillo, who has been in professional baseball since 1994, was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to take Walker's spot on the roster. "He was the best available guy at the time," Trembley said. "I don't know of any other options." Walker had a 0-0 record and 5.11 ERA in 12 1/3 innings scattered over 22 appearances. The specialist allowed left-handers to hit .458 (11-for-24) with four home runs and 10 RBIs against him. Walker was 4-5 with a 4.62 ERA in his previous two seasons with the Orioles. He also spent parts of seven years with the Royals and Tigers. "He's a great teammate and a tremendous presence in the clubhouse," Trembley said. "He's been through the wars, and he totally understands. We left it at that." Castillo appeared in 28 games with Baltimore last year, recording a victory in his only Major League decision. He was 1-0 with a 3.81 ERA with Norfolk. Castillo was drafted by the Giants in the third round of the 1994 First-Year Player Draft as a pitcher/first baseman/outfielder. He became a full-time pitcher while playing in the Independent Northern League in 2002. "He certainly understands perseverance as well as anyone," Trembley said. "I can relate to that. He's done very well. He's gone in as the left-handed setup guy and become the closer, and has been more consistent."
