The move was made retroactive to Sept. 6, which means that Guthrie could technically come off the DL and make a final rotation turn or two if healthy. Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said during the weekend that the Orioles would have to consider shutting Guthrie down if he couldn't throw a bullpen session by the time the team left on its road trip. Guthrie, who pitched to a 10-11 record and a 3.57 ERA, has lost three straight decisions and hasn't pitched since Aug. 29. "We're getting to that point," Trembley said Friday. "What's he missed, 14 days? He's got to throw bullpens. He's got to get on the mound. [Head athletic trainer] Richie [Bancells] told me today that Guthrie said he feels much better. But I have no barometer on good, better, best. ... To me, you've got to get out and pitch. You've got to get out on the mound and throw." Guthrie has been able to play catch, but he hadn't been able to throw a full bullpen session last week. The right-hander was scratched from one start with a tired shoulder and another with a case of tonsillitis before being placed on the DL. Guthrie has fought being shut down, a fact Trembley discussed freely before the team left for Toronto. "Knowing Guthrie as I know Guthrie, he wants to do it," he said. "But I think we've got to make some wise decisions here, do what's best for the pitcher. If he can pitch, fine. If he can't pitch or if there's a question about it, he isn't going to pitch." --
