I know it will take some time for Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson to get fully acclimated, but do you think that they have the pieces to be able to dominate like San Antonio, Phoenix and Dallas do right now? It's way too early to put the Nuggets in the same category with the three Western bullies. Anthony and Iverson at least need a training camp together to be mentioned in that breath. As for this season, Nuggets coach George Karl is still struggling with his rotation. He wants his team to play better defense, but his top perimeter defender, Yakhouba Diawara, and one of his top post defenders, Reggie Evans, don't provide much offense. Among the things Karl is grappling over is whether to play those guys more and lose offense or play them less and lose defense. So I'd call a missing piece a solid defender who can carry his weight on offense. I had remembered Anthony had suffered a hyperextended elbow a few years ago. And that is indeed the primary reason he wears it. But it also has become like a security blanket for Anthony. As for Iverson, he likes to keep his shooting hand warm. It must be working considering Iverson just scored his 20,000th career point. If the Nuggets avoid the luxury tax, that trade could end up saving more than $8 million. I have no problem with dumping Hodge. I know being shot last April set him back, but I've always thought he was a drafting mistake. As for Boykins, I thought the Nuggets could have gotten more for him, but I have been impressed with Blake. And saving money now could result in the brass spending in the future to bring in a pivotal piece. It looks as if Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke would prefer to try to get under the luxury tax this season before the payroll goes crazy the next two years. But, if Kroenke believes the Nuggets could be one key player away from doing some playoff damage this season, he might give the OK for management to use it. If not, the Nuggets will carry it into the offseason and perhaps next season. If the Nuggets are willing to take on extra dollars, it's a valuable piece to use in a deal with a team trying to shave payroll. His minutes are the most wasted minutes on the club. Camby, 'Melo, and Iverson can all distribute the ball, and Iverson is a much much better point guard. Has Blake ever made multiple passes in a game where a teammate received the ball in a position to score? With the talent on this team what the heck is he getting minutes for? The offensive struggles are a result of playing 4 on 5, and his defensive woes leave us with 4 defending 5. This player isn't even close to NBA level. His forcing everything destroys the rythmn on offense and the stagnation permeates the defense then too. The coaching staff appears to be a joke, they are clueless. It's a shame, because Iverson can be scintillating if he has some motion to work with. With all the players out there, it's ridiculous to have players who can't make a shot for anything. In fact, since neither one can shoot a lick, they should be encouraged not to even consider lofting the ball toward the basket unless they are a foot away. 'Melo, Smith, Iverson, Camby and Blake average a combined 97.1 PPG - meaning not a lot more offense is needed.
