ANTM's Hannah Defends Her Crying and Calls Out Molly
After successfully channeling the right emotions for a Moroccan wedding on
the beach, Hannah was sent home last week, leaving Molly and Brittani to duke
it out in the ANTM finale. We had the chance to chat with Hannah about her
elimination and her time on the show. Read on to find out who she's rooting
for, what she thought of that crying montage, and what her next big modeling
goal is (hint: Tyra might be able to give her a few pointers!):
Wetpaint: It seemed like at the Moroccan wedding shoot, you did really well.
Were you surprised by the elimination?
Hannah: Well, I was a little taken aback. I was kind of hoping I'd get first
call-out. It just felt like that's what was gonna happen. I got a huge
compliment from Ivan of IMG saying that I have star potential or star
quality. Tyra said it was the most beautiful picture she had seen of me. So,
with those comments, I was like, oh nice, this is gonna be a top two, you
know? I felt really positive about it.
Then, when I walked into the elimination part of it, I felt like something
changed. It was really weird. The energy was different, and yeah, the energy
is always different when it's time for elimination and everything gets
serious. And when there's three left, there's so much pressure, and getting
first call-out takes a lot of that pressure off. I was just hoping that would
be me, and it wasn't. I was a little surprised, but I accept the decision the
judges made. I totally understand they are looking for something else, and
I'm really ready to go out and work. I really appreciate the opportunity they
gave me. It's all good.
Do you feel like you were portrayed as more emotional than you really are?
There was that crying montage of you.
Yes! Oh my gosh, I know. I was like, finally they're giving me a montage and
it's me crying. Like they kept them all in a jar and waited until the end to
let them out. I was like, come on, you guys! Why didn't you show all the
times that I made funny jokes or something? Honestly, you saw the last
episode — everybody was crying. And everybody cried throughout the whole
entire competition.
There's so much stress, you want to do well. There's always a camera around,
and also, not being able to talk to your family when you want to, the support
system that's rooting for you and only you. Living in a house with a bunch of
other girls that you have to share everything with — I'm OK with sharing
with people, but when you have to share with a group of girls and they're the
only girls that you're talking to and hanging out with and there's no
Internet or TV. There's so that much that you have to consider before you
make a judgment about someone when they're upset or breaking down because of
all the stress. And everybody cried! I guess I just lasted long enough for
them to make a montage about it.
Everybody did cry. Especially in this last episode.
Exactly! I was like, why are you guys laying it all on me? And then the fact
that Molly was talking about how I couldn't handle it and then she was crying
to Mr. Jay like, "I hope I did OK!" I'm like, OK, Molly, you can't call me
out for being too sensitive when you're crying to your artistic director
about your performance. I never did that.
Molly questioned whether your skin was thick enough to handle the modeling
world. Do you think there is room for sensitive models in the industry?
Well, I think there's an important difference to be made between someone
who's sensitive and someone who allows themselves to be vulnerable in
appropriate situations. That's what I meant by my strength being that I'm
vulnerable, and that I wear my heart on my sleeve, and that I come across as
authentic and real and honest. Because when I show up to a shoot, I'm not
gonna show up being like, "Oh I had the worst day ever, blah blah blah." But
when I show up to set and they say we want this feeling, or this is the
story, I'm gonna believe that story and I'm gonna take myself there. That's
not gonna mean me crying every time. That's going to be me passionately in
love, or crazy over bags, or this huge ethereal goddess who attempts to save
the planet from all the landfill trash.
Before, I hated the fact that I was so vulnerable. I hated that I was so
easily touched by something. And now I definitely have thick skin, and I
think it's important to have thick skin. But there's a difference between
having a thick skin and being a cold, driven biotch.
Who is the one person throughout the competition that you think was sent home
too early?
I think Jaclyn was sent home too early. I think that was really unfair for
her. She does come from a small town or whatever, but she made it to the same
amount of go-sees as Brittani and booked the same amount of go-sees as Molly.
And she's a positive person. I feel like they didn't really take into
consideration what she had offered. I don't know, it just kind of felt really
weird and premature.
Who do you think will win: Molly or Brittani?
At this point, I feel like Molly has a really good chance. Her photographs
have been amazing and she's gotten really good praise from the judges and has
been top photo every since we've been to Morocco. But Brittani has been
consistently ahead of the pack and she has an amazing runway walk. She's so
fierce, and I think she represents more of the entire Top Model package than
Molly does. So, I think it's gonna be Brittani.
What’s the one thing you think fans of the show need to know about what
happens behind-the-scenes?
We don't always cry all the time. We're all friends and we're all goofballs.
Yeah, we sometimes hate each other's guts and we really hope that somebody
else goes home, but at the end of the day when we're back at the house, we
have fun together. We're all friends. I keep in touch with all of the girls,
and they're kind of like sisters to me now, you know?
What are your plans for the near future?
Well, IMG is a hopefully kind of thing. I haven't heard from them, but I just
really, really hope so. I would really like that. That would be cool. If not,
then I'm just gonna go knock on every single door I can possibly knock on. I
don't know if I'm gonna go to New York or LA., but I'm definitely gonna go to
one of those places where I can start my career. America's Next Top Model has
been my goal, and it was like a really high one, and since I've made that one
happen, I've also set another really high goal for myself. This one's pretty
high. I hope to someday be a Victoria's Secret angel. That would be really cool. That's like the holy grail of modeling, to be an angel. So,
that's my next super high goal.
Well, like you said before, Ivan Bart had a lot of positive things to say
about you, so maybe IMG isn't so far off then.
That would be so cool. That would be kind of like winning for me
