Jose Enrique
"At first, under Sam Allardyce, I didn't play much. And when I did, what
took me by surprise was how physical and fast the game is.
"You have so many fast players.
For me that wasn't too bad because I've always been quick.
I used to run competitively at school. I maybe could have done it
professionally but football was what I wanted to do.
"So I could handle the speed but what was difficult was communication.
I didn't speak English and I couldn't understand what my team-mates
were saying during games.
"Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins were my main friends when I arrived.
They used to come to my house. I didn't really speak English
but we managed to get along anyway. We had players like Mark, Oba,
Michael Owen and Geremi and we thought we were going to be challenging
for a place in Europe. But obviously it didn't work out like that.
"All the coaches I've had here - with the exception of Chris this year -
haven't really focused on tactics. In Spain you work on tactics all the time
because that is what the football is about over there.
Everything is a lot more orderly. In England it's all about being fast
and physical. I've done very, very little on tactics in my time here.
"Allardyce was the one who brought me to club and gave me the chance to play
in England and I'm very grateful to him for that, for taking a chance on me.
"I didn't really know Keegan but he seemed like a nice man.
The thing was that he didn't pick me either and I heard that he didn't want
me at the club. That didn't come from him because he barely ever spoke to me.
"I only knew Joe for a very short time because of his heart problems. He
didn't really talk much to the players or work with them but he started me.
"For that I was very grateful."
"Obviously Shearer is an idol up here but he was in a very difficult position.
He had so little time and we were more or less down before he took over.
It was an impossible job.
"It was the first time I had been relegated in my career.
I just felt so bad for the whole city and the fans.
Afterwards it was strange for us all. There were lots of rumours about us
all being sold but that never happened. We all told ourselves that
we wanted to stay, be positive and get back in the top flight. And we did.
"Chris is a fantastic guy, as is Colin Calderwood. He was the right person to
take over and you can see that from the effect he has had on the team.
He works so hard - I think he spends 24 hours a day at the training ground
sometimes.
"Last year we started going for team meals. It's quite normal in Spain to do
that once a month or so and I'm glad we do it now because it brings you
together and we have a good chance to talk about football.
"It is getting better and I can understand people now. As for talking,
I'm fine when it comes to football but if it the subject moves on to things
like politics, I struggle.
"I have to say though that although it is OK when people speak in a
normal English accent, understanding a Geordie one or other strong ones
is impossible.
"I am starting to pick some up though because we have a cleaner cal led
Lorraine who speaks Geordie and so I hear her say things like "hiya"
which I had never heard before.
"Things are good now."

lol
