Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres has revealed Newcastle were prepared
to pay 25.9m for him if they failed to land Michael Owen.
The Magpies moved for Spain international Torres - previously a target for
Chelsea - as a back-up plan in case they missed out on number one target
Owen, who completed a move from Real Madrid to St James' Park on Wednesday
for a fee believed to be around 17m.
However, Torres has revealed he would not have been keen on a move to England
and said: "Newcastle's offer came at the last minute when the Primera Liga
had already started. (The club) didn't even listen to the offer.
"I know how important that money would have been and for that reason I want
to thank them for their effort in order to keep me at Atletico.
"The truth is that I'm very happy they didn't negotiate."
The 21-year-old, who has been a first-team regular for Atletico since his
arrival at the club in 2001, is currently with the national team preparing
for Saturday's international friendly against Canada.
