General manager Kiki Vandeweghe will take over as coach of the New Jersey
Nets.
Combining a soft voice with hard arguments, Kiki Vandeweghe made an eloquent
case for trading Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson and Vince Carter over the last
19 turbulent months, and then helped Nets president Rod Thorn expedite the
rebuilding process by getting young talent in return for their gigantic
contracts.
Now, with the team’s rebuilding phase stuck in a record-tying, 0-17
quagmire, Thorn figures the general manager who brought the younger players
to New Jersey should be responsible for getting them to grow up a little
faster.
Vandeweghe will be announced as the 16th coach in the franchise’s NBA
history Tuesday, and could take over the hot seat as early as Wednesday night
against the Dallas Mavericks at Izod Center, though that has yet to be
decided.
Del Harris, the distinguished head coach with the Rockets, Bucks and Lakers
who retired last summer after a one-year stint on Vinny Del Negro’s staff in
Chicago, will be brought in to be Vandeweghe’s top assistant.
Del Harris,
The 51-year-old Vandeweghe has never been a coach, and the team officials say
he was initially reluctant to take the job created by the dismissal of
Lawrence Frank on Sunday morning in Los Angeles.
But Thorn mandated that Vandeweghe occupy that role, if only because his
imprint on the roster is indelible, as he is especially close to Devin
Harris, Yi Jianlian and Courtney Lee — the three young players acquired for
Kidd, Jefferson and Carter.
It is in that one area — player development — that Vandeweghe admits is a
personal strength. His earliest success story occurred in Dallas, where he
helped transform Dirk Nowitzki from a rookie bust into a world-class player
in two years.
Dirk
Vandeweghe didn’t deny his role — “We spent every evening in the gym, at
least two hours of film and workouts,” he said in a conversation last
February. But at least one person said Vandeweghe was being modest.
“Dirk deserves most of the credit, of course,” Mavericks owner Mark Cuban
said in a recent interview. “But I think Kiki was certainly instrumental in
helping Dirk understand how to be successful in the NBA. That’s what Kiki is
good at ... communicating.”
It is that talent that the Nets hope Vandeweghe can bring to the gym every
day over the next five months, now that their younger players are starting to
get healthy again.
The job, however, is merely temporary; contracts for Thorn and Vandeweghe
both expire after this season, and neither has the authority to bring in
long-term deals of any kind until the ownership transfer to Russian
businessman Mikhail Prokhorov is completed sometime next year.
But over the next 65 games, Vandeweghe can at least be sure that the new head
coach will follow management’s agenda, something he wasn’t always sure
about when Frank was coaching a crippled, makeshift roster.
Development of the younger players is the priority, perhaps at the expense of
everything else: As Thorn put it Sunday night, the Nets “won’t take on any
contract that would materially affect us going forward” into the 2010 free
agent market.
That is in harmony with Vandeweghe’s stated goal after he engineered the
Kidd deal in February of 2008.
“I’m never satisfied with being ‘sorta’ competitive,” Vandeweghe said
then. “I want to go for it — not just win, but win big. ...
But the worst thing to be in this league is to be mediocre. Sometimes, you
have to bide your time, like we learned in Denver.”
As GM in Denver, Vandeweghe followed a similar formula of cap-clearance and
free-agent acquisition, and turned the worst team in the NBA around in just
three years. The Nuggets were Western Conference runners-up last season, and
aside from point guard Chauncey Billups, Denver’s nucleus was assembled
almost entirely by Vandeweghe.
Meanwhile Monday, Frank held a conference call to cap his six-year tenure as
coach and was gratified that every player he left behind spoke highly of his
leadership. Remarkably, the Teaneck native conducted the call from his old
office at the practice facility, where he was cleaning out his desk.
“That goes to show you, I don’t really know where to go,” Frank said. “I
put my GPS on ‘Home,’ and it went here — go figure.”
