Lucas: Williams can be great

John Lucas takes one look at Marcus Williams and sees a kid with the
self-awareness of a gym sock.
Okay, that's the harsh way of putting it. But that's what the visiting coach
sees in his latest pupil: A young player who doesn't know what he has, or how
to use it.
"You know, this kid can be great," said Lucas, the legendary coach and player
who is working with the Nets' second-year point guard this week.
Lucas:
"He's got some great talent. You know, point guards are born, they're not
made. He's got all the instincts to play the position. There are mostly combo
guys playing (the position) now. Jason Kidd is a pure point. But (Williams)
has a chance to be that way."
Then Lucas said something that may resonate with Williams, who has heard it
over their first two days of workings: He's not going to get there until he
breaches what Lucas sees as an obvious mental hurdle.
"I don't think he believes how good he is," Lucas said. "Because the guy in
front of him is so great. It's really hard for a kid like this. You have to
get him to accept the fact that his time will come. Even if he was averaging
10 points, he won't play more than 15 minutes."
Last season, many people in the Nets organization said the same thing:
Williams needs playing time to generate confidence, and when he can't get on
the floor, his confidence tends to wane, and that has a deleterious effect on
his conditioning and attitude.
That leaves everyone else wondering whether Williams wants it enough --
whether he's going to work to be great, keep the extra weight off, and turn
into the leader a point guard must be.
Lucas is starting on the ground floor.
Lucas
"You know what, I have to convince him that he's good first," Lucas said. "I
don't think he believes how good he really is. Point guards have swagger. The
swagger has to come to him. As he matures he'll get it. Remember, he should
still be in college. And now he thinks he should be telling Vince Carter what
to do?"
Lucas:
Point well taken. It is often forgotten how most of a point guard's
development is between the ears, and how it could take two or three or even
four years -- which was how long it took for John Stockton and Steve Nash to
earn starting jobs in the NBA.
What usually clicks? They generate enough confidence to do their job at
different speeds. Williams, who hasn't played much since returning from his
broken foot, plays at one speed.
"The thing is, we have to get his energy level up," Lucas said. "We have to
get him to understand what playing hard is. Think about the difference
between he and Darrell Armstrong: Darrell came from dirt. He went to
Fayetteville, and he was in the USBL when I owned the (Miami Tropics). You
can't expect Marcus to have that fire, because everywhere he's played, he's
been the guy.
Lucas:
Darrrell Armstrong
"So I'm working on that first," Lucas continued, pointing to his own head.
"When all the skills are the same, what separates one player from the rest is
that (fire)."
Lucas
Lucas has been a head coach in Cleveland, San Antonio and Philadelphia. He's
seen the ones who have it, and the ones who do not.
"I had Kobe in our gym in Philly when he was 17," Lucas said. "Nobody has a
stronger mind-set than Kobe. From Day 1, he was an assassin. Now Marcus has
to get some of that. J-Kidd isn't going to play forever. So the faster he
gets some of that, the bigger help he's going to be to this team."
The process has been delayed by some bad luck, of course. The cracked
metatarsal Williams suffered two days before training camp put him on a shelf
for 10 weeks, and since his return Dec. 18, he has played all of 73 minutes.
The second year is supposed to be crucial in a point guard's development.
Lucas vows this won't be a wasted season.
"The reason I say that is, he has the nuances of how to play," Lucas said.
"He's a pass-first guy. I told him when I used to play with great players,
like Rudy Tomjanovich and Calvin Murphy, I told them, 'If my pass is on
target, you better be making shots. Because I'm giving up my offense for
you.'
Calvin
"He has to get that kind of swagger. He's young. And he's playing behind one
of the greatest point guards ever to play. So it's hard for him to see that
right now."
