The way Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals ended, with Vince Carter
fumbling the ball out of bounds, unable to get off a final shot with Eric Snow
guarding him, played a part in the decision.
The way Game 6, the season ender, went with Carter unable to go off with Damon
Jones guarding him, also played a part.
The final offensive play in the Round 1, Game 6 clincher, when Carter was a
decoy and Richard Jefferson scored over Chris Bosh to give the Nets the lead,
was a factor.
Coach Lawrence Frank saw that the Nets were too reliant upon Carter offensively
, felt they would be better, more dangerous, tougher to figure out if other
players got involved.
So, on the first day of training camp Tuesday, Frank inserted his new offense,
which has more movement, less straight pick-and-rolls, and the spreading of the
wealth, so to speak.
Who will it affect the most? Carter. He won't have as many straight pick-and
-rolls and post ups. Who couldn't care in the least? Carter. (At least at
this point.)
"You can score without having the ball in your hands as well, whatever works,"
Carter said. "Right now we're just trying to win games and go as far as
possible. If they feel that's the way we have to go, let's do it."
A few years back, Frank changed up the offense, but Jefferson said it was a
little confusing to the players. No one has complained about it yet. The
leaders - Jason Kidd and Carter - seem to be for it, and that's really the
most important thing.
"Everyone's agreeable now - by and large," Frank said. "We haven't played a
game. We haven't lost a game. The key is, if you lose a couple games, do you
[waver]? Look, we're staying the course.
"This is how we're going to play. We're not going to be a stagnant team. We'
re still taking advantage of people's special skills. It's not like Carter or
Jefferson has to take a backseat. We still know what they do best. We're
going to put them in positions (to score), but it's going to be preceded by
movement."
Frank said he hasn't changed things drastically through five practices. He
called them "real minor tweaks" and said that he's put in "probably three new
sets."
The Nets coach just wants more "flow" in the offense before it becomes a
pick-and-roll, post-up or isolation. Frank also wants more transition baskets.
With Jamaal Magloire, the best big man rebounder the Nets have had since
Kenyon Martin, they should be able to run more.
Defense is a major point emphasis, too. Getting a point guard like Darrell
Armstrong to pressure the ball all the way up the court should help there.
On the surface, these changes seem to have the Nets going back in time to
their most successful era, but Frank is adding his own wrinkle, his own style.
When the Nets won the East in 2001 and 2002, they ran the Princeton offense,
which was predicated entirely on moving without the ball, reading and reacting.
Guys like Kerry Kittles excelled at it. Kidd, of course, was the catalyst,
and Jason Collins' knowledge of where to be and setting the screen to free up
the shooter shouldn't be under-appreciated.
Going back to some concepts of that fits this group. It's better built for
Jefferson, who is not as good in pick-and-rolls and post-ups. Kidd is the
master and Collins knows his role and plays it perfectly, which is why you
should expect him to retain his starting job. Can't tell you how many times
I've heard Collins "doesn't make any game-plan mistakes."
So on Day 1, Frank threw the new wrinkles at the players. He scrimmaged on
the first day for the first time, hoping it leads to a better start to the
season, and he showed them parts of the new offense.
"It keeps the ball moving," Kidd said. "There's not a lot of pounding, which
is good. "I think anytime you move in this league it gives you a chance to
win. When it goes from one side to the other teams can't load up on you."
All the other guys should have no problems with it. The young guys will do
whatever Frank asks. The new guys will follow suit, and the guys who were
here during the Eastern Conference championship know the deal.
Carter has to be the one to buy in, and watching him and listening to him, it
appears he has.
"It's going to be interesting," Carter said. "Now there's going to be a lot
of looks for everybody, a lot of movement for teams trying to guard me a
particular way. We can go back to the post-ups and pick-and-rolls and all
that stuff as well. Just give them a variety of things, so you have to
prepare for a lot of things now.
"Now you have to guard me with the ball in my hands and you have to guard me
without the ball in my hands as well as RJ and JKidd. There's a lot of
movement for everybody.
The key will be, as Frank said, how everyone responds if the Nets lose some
games.

Armstrong should be here for one of the Friday practices provided he passes a
physical. The veteran will back up Kidd, whose minutes the Nets hope to cut
again this year.
They needed another point after Marcus Williams had foot surgery that will
keep him out 6-8 weeks. But the Nets wanted a third point guard anyway.
D.Armstrong
