SAN FRANCISCO -- The 90-minute bus ride here from Sacramento late Monday
night was a rolling mausoleum -- nobody talked, nobody suggested a card game,
nobody even much looked at anyone. That line about misery loving company?
Blowing a 20-point lead makes you so miserable, you don't want any company.
"Terrible," Mikki Moore described it. "Everyone had their headphones on,
nobody wanted to look at a stat sheet, didn't want to talk to no one. I
talked to my girl for about five minutes, and I just got off the phone, I was
so disgusted."
Mikki Moore
In the back somewhere was Vince Carter -- still stewing with his Bang &
Olufsen's jammed into his ears, barely acknowledging a pat on the shoulder
from Nets president Rod Thorn, still wondering if he's descending into some
kind of superstar hell, where the spirit is willing but the jump shot is
irretrievably broken.
A night's sleep and the practice session yesterday improved his mood, but
just barely. It's a mental game for him now, because without Richard
Jefferson around to keep defenses honest over on the other side, he's a
target -- easy to find, easy to keep up with and suddenly easy to stop.
"It's all about finding a way," Carter said, thinking back to his eight-point
dud at ARCO, or his .368 stroke in his last three games. "In my mind it's
inexcusable to blow a 20-point lead."
The film session that preceded the Nets' workout at the University of San
Francisco was the most comprehensive to date -- Lawrence Frank reviewed every
last possession, good and bad. Carter saw the seven shots he missed. He saw
his coach pull him out of the game after he took three straight bad shots in
the first quarter. He saw the four fouls that made him play tentatively. He
saw his five turnovers, including the two in the last 71 seconds. He saw the
drives to the rim that missed and his shoulders slump after he wasn't
rewarded by a whistle. He saw the two foul shots he missed with 4:06 left,
his team up eight.
He also saw the team go into a dream flow when he was on the bench in the
third, stretching a lead from 10 to 20.
And he saw the defense -- never leaving him, loading up on him, blitzing him
off every screen, sending help as soon as he turned the corner. The Warriors
will go to school on that tonight.
What should he have done differently?
"Nothing. Just keep playing," Carter said. "Unfortunately, I couldn't stay in
the game because of foul trouble. There's so much you can do. One thing I
could have done differently is make two free throws, at least one. I pride
myself on being able to get to the line; I got there twice. And missing two
free throws ... that didn't sit well more than anything."
The same thing happened against the Knicks (up five, 1:22 left) -- he pointed
that out himself.
Maybe he isn't used to getting there in the fourth quarters anymore, it was
suggested. In the past seven games, he's averaged 3.3 attempts at the line.
Where's the respect? And does he even deserve it?
"I don't really want to get into it. I've got to keep playing and put the
onus on them to make the call," he said. "It's just tough, because it hurts
my team. I'm being aggressive trying to get to the basket, sometimes I'm not
getting the call. It just hurts."
Here's how much it hurts: "I won't get over it until the game starts," he
said.
Notes: Moore went 8-for-8 at Sacramento, his second perfect game this season.
He went 9-for-9 on Dec. 30 at Minnesota. No player has had two perfect games
with at least eight attempts since the 1996-97 season, when Anthony Mason of
Charlotte (8-for-8, 11-for-11) and Tyrone Hill of Cleveland (9-for-9,
8-for-8) turned the trick.... Jason Kidd, back home again, is in his prime.
Just ask him: "I think this is probably the best I've played consistently --
from start-up, to this point," he said. "I feel great physically. I think
I've just gotten a little bit smarter -- understanding the game, knowing when
to pick the spots when you need to do something."
Jason Kidd
