The annual culmination of the NBA’s trading season occurred on Thursday at
2 p.m. Central time. Hornets general manager Jeff Bower announced later that
afternoon that the Hornets had acquired center Marc Jackson and
forward Linton Johnson III from the New Jersey Nets, in exchange for
forward Bostjan Nachbar.
And what eventually becomes a package of players, draft picks and money
moving between teams requires a tremendous amount of patience, awareness and
savvy – both business-wise and basketball-wise – before players find new
homes or draft choices are exchanged. A trade is not simply the result of a
few conversations between the individual teams involved, but also between
other clubs around the league and, ultimately, the NBA.
The Hornets are already reaping the benefits of a busy Thursday that included
chats with teams around the league, the creation of the deal and conference
calls with the NBA’s attorneys.
As fans saw over the weekend, both new additions made an immediate impact for
the Hornets. Johnson, a third-year pro from Tulane, collected the first
double-double of his career on Saturday at Utah. He finished with 17 points
and a game-best 11 rebounds. Jackson, who is now with his fifth NBA franchise
after starting his career in Europe, added eight points and 12 rebounds in
wins at Utah and Portland.
Tulane
In Jackson, the Hornets obtained a dynamic center, something they set out to
acquire by the trading deadline. As Bower worked to make a deal, he remembered
that the team needed another athlete who could offer support in the frontcourt.
According to Bower, he had watched Jackson over the years, dating back to the
Philadelphia native’s career at Temple, and saw in him the ability to score
and rebound.
“Jackson is a big-bodied guy who brings experience and quality off the bench
,” Bower explains. “The need for a Jackson-type guy was made more necessary
with the injury to Jackson Vroman (broken right wrist).”
Bower describes Johnson as a “terrific athlete who has worked hard on his
NBA game.”
So what steps did Bower have to complete before he could bring the former
Nets reserve to OKC?
Well, Bower’s interest in Jackson is not just the result of needing to fill
a void in the frontcourt. “I first expressed interest in Marc a few months
ago,” says Bower, who coincidentally saw a member of the Nets front office
at a college basketball game. “I knew then that he could be an asset to our
team.”
With the priority of the day being to bring Jackson to the Hornets, Bower
began serious negotiations with Nets president Ron Thorn.
Ron Thorn
“Between the two teams, we have to make sure we agree to a deal that is
going to be beneficial to both clubs, on and off the court,” Bower explains.
“We had to work from our common interests to come up with a solid deal for
both the Hornets and the Nets.”
Bower
And while Bower was busy working on his own deal, he also had to keep up with
what was going on around the rest of the NBA. Especially at the trade deadline,
when teams around the league often make deals, it’s important to know what
possible moves might be made.
Bower closely followed developments around the league and reminds fans that
"for every deal that does happen, there are nine others that don’t.”
When teams agree on a deal – after keeping in mind issues including health,
salary-cap impact, player availability and the overall need to improve as a
club – they must submit the trade to the NBA for approval.
Here is where the 2 p.m. trade deadline can be deceiving. All deals must be
submitted to the NBA by the deadline, but they might not be approved for
several hours. With teams around the league submitting deals to the league,
other teams have to wait their turns.
At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Bower and a Nets representative got their turn with a
conference call with the league’s attorneys. For several hours after the
deadline, members of the Hornets family – staff, media and fans – waited to
learn if the team was able to make a deal.
With the details ironed out, Bower, with the assistance of the team’s public
relations department, announced that Jackson and Johnson would be the newest
Hornets. Of course, they would first have to report to their new team and pass
their physicals before they would be OK’d to practice and play.
“There were no physical concerns for any of the players involved, so it was
really just a matter of getting the guys to their new teams,” Bower says.
And for the Hornets that meant the arrival of two athletes sure to contribute
as they make their push toward the NBA postseason.
Hats off to Mr. Bower on a job well done.
Mr. Bower
According to Coach Scott, “Jeff did a fantastic job. Despite getting a phone
call every 30 seconds from different teams trying to make deals, JB kept his
cool and remembered factors like payroll, salary cap and our need to get a
big man to OKC.”
Scott continues, “I am really happy with the outcome of the day.”
