These are the facts: Abdur-Rahim suffered a knee injury in 1993 that required arthroscopic surgery. He missed seven games in high school but has never missed a college or NBA game because of the injury. Doctors for the Raptors, who initially drafted him, Atlanta and Portland, teams that acquired him in trades, didn't balk at the knee. So why are the Nets hesitating to put their chips in the middle of the table? Because Adbur-Rahim will be 29 in December and this is a six-year deal. And because doctors have yet to find a way to reverse the wear, tear and scar tissue that are common in a pro athlete's knee. Based on his track record, Abdur-Rahim is a hand worth playing. Based on the long-term concerns of a player with a knee condition, well, it's not your $38 million at stake. "It's not always cut and dried," Nets president Rod Thorn said instead when he was expecting to introduce Adbur-Rahim as the newest Net Thursday. "Different people react differently to different stresses let's say, physically. "If a guy could play every day and has been playing every day and his performance hasn't suffered from it, you have to take that into consideration," continued Thorn. "So we'll get all the information we can get and then we'll make as informed a decision as we can." That decision almost surely will come Monday. Between now and then the Nets were doing their diligence, sending copies of Andur-Rahim's MRIs to several doctors, said one source close to the situation. "They had another doctor look at the MRI [yesterday] and he concurred with what Shareef has been saying," Aaron Goodwin, Abdru-Rahim's agent told The Post. "This condition shouldn't cause a problem." Goodwin said the Nets consulted with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Altcheck, who has operated on Nets star Jason Kidd, among others. Abdur-Rahim told The Post on Thursday he is not angry at the Nets for being cautious. Clearly, this is where he wants to be. And clearly the Nets need Abdur-Rahim.
