Both Paul Silas and Brendan Malone benched him. Teammates raised their eyebrows when the point guard complained about not getting enough touches and about LeBron James taking too many shots. Fans turned against him after hearing McInnis call himself "an independent contractor." And when he skipped a flight to Toronto in mid-April, management considered leaving him off the playoff roster entirely -- if the Cavaliers made the playoffs, which didn't happen, ostensibly because they had too many players like McInnis. But whatever label he carried in Cleveland, the Nets will call him their backup point guard for at least one year. Team president Rod Thorn -- outbid in his first choice for Jason Kidd's understudy, and unable to agree on a price with the fallback option -- actually found a more talented player than the first two guys he pursued. But in giving McInnis a one-year deal for $3.5 million next season (with a player option for $3.7 in 2006-07), Thorn is also taking on a player who doesn't exactly match the good-citizen mold he has always tried to fill. The Nets failed in their attempt to sign Keyon Dooling and Milt Palacio during this free-agent season. McInnis is ranked much higher than both, but his other issues explain why he came so cheaply. This is the same player, after all, who complained when he had to come off the bench behind Damon Stoudamire in Portland and Eric Snow in Cleveland. Agent Steve Kaufman defended him this way: "In all my years in this business, it was as unprofessional a job from a coach as I've ever seen," he said, referring to Silas. "In Jeff's case, I'm not going to get into a Q and A of his problems. But he's played for three franchises -- the Clippers, Trail Blazers and that fiasco in Cleveland. I don't know what else to say about that, other than this is an entirely different franchise." Whether that means he can live with being Kidd's caddy remains to be seen, however. The Nets, for their part, aren't worried. "It's not like he doesn't know what he's coming in for," one team official said. "He'll get a clean slate here. And we're happy because he's by far more superior to the guys we didn't get."
