Apparently, at a starting point of five years and $85 million, no one was. Another Boras client to the Nats. Then, the outfielder had a six-year, $108-million offer from Boston, a club that was used to spending that kind of money on this kind of free agent. The Nationals, neither in-season contenders nor offseason factors at the time, had to go an extra year at the same rate — $18 million annually — to land Werth. They selected Rendon with the sixth pick in the 2011 draft. When you have bad teams, you receive high draft picks. He went directly to Lerner. Lerner went directly to Rizzo: I got you a closer. Soriano made the Nationals better, but at two years and $28 million? The only reliever in history to ever earn more on an annual basis was Mariano Rivera.
