The Washington Nationals on Monday claimed righthander Enrique Gonzalez off
waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Gonzalez has been placed the Nationals' 40-man roster but will not report,
according to team officials.
"Enrique has a quality arm and a four-pitch mix," Nationals assistant general
manager Mike Rizzo said. "He has been effective throughout his career in both
a relief and starter role, but we believe he has the stuff and repertoire to
pitch in a starting role for us."
During a pair of stints with Arizona each of the last two seasons, Gonzalez
posted a 3-7 record and a 5.82 ERA in 23 appearances - 18 starts.
The 25-year-old Gonzalez went 8-10 with a 5.14 ERA in 27 starts for Class AAA
Tucson this season.
