The New York Yankees are finalizing a trade to acquire closer David Bednar
from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN. Deal is pending medical
review.

Among the return to the Pirates in Bednar deal, per ESPN sources: Catcher
Rafael Flores, who tore up AA, is now at AAA, is a top-shelf framer and
regarded as a big league-ready catcher. A very good centerpiece. Also in it:
Edgleen Perez, who is 19 with excellent swing decisions.

Bednar was one of the most coveted relievers left on the market. Not only has
he been lights-out since returning from his brief demotion in mid-April (1.70
in 39 appearances), but he's under control through 2026.

David Bednar is under team control through 2026, earning $5.9 million this
year. That's important to the Yankees, especially with Devin Williams and Luke
Weaver among their potential free agents after '25.

Yankee catching depth has been key to trades with Ramon Flores and Edgleen
Perez joining Jose Trevino, Alex Jackson, Luis Torrens, Agustin Ramirez, Kyle
Higashioka, Carlos Naravez, Ben Rortvedt as catchers NYY has dealt since end
of '23 season.
