Whiteside, 33, appeared in 12 games over two stints with the 2012 World Champion Giants, going 1-for-11. He played the majority of the season with Triple-A Fresno, batting .224 (45-for-201) with 27 runs, 11 doubles, one home run and 20 RBI in 60 games. He also caught 25-of-69 (36.2%) potential base stealers with the Grizzlies. Since 2009, he has compiled a 3.32 catchers ERA, the lowest such mark among all Major League catchers over the four-year span (min. 1,200.0 innings played). Originally selected by Baltimore in the sixth round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, Whiteside has appeared in 208 career Major League games with the Orioles (2005) and Giants (2009-12), batting .215 (105-for-489) with 21 doubles, 10 home runs and 43 RBI. In his Major League career, he has caught 23.6 percent of attempted base stealers (33-of-140). He was also behind the plate for Jonathan Sanchez’s no-hitter on July 10, 2009 vs. San Diego. --
