After he drew a walk as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, the Yankees pulled catcher Jose Molina for another pinch-hitter, Hideki Matsui. That meant Posada would be staying in to catch. So when the Angels changed pitchers, Posada left the base, grabbed a glove, and played long toss for a few minutes to loosen his arm. Nothing too special, just odd — a base runner pausing to sneak in a few practice throws. What happened next was hilarious, and nothing Posada prepared for. In the bottom of the inning, with two outs, Chone Figgins lifted a foul pop behind the plate. He bumped into Posada, dislodging Posada’s glove. Calmly, Posada caught the ball with his bare hands. (Interestingly, while Posada does not wear batting gloves to hit, he wears one on his left hand when he catches.) The play came in the same inning as a dropped pop-up by Derek Jeter, Posada’ s best friend on the team. “It’s probably the easiest play you can make — Jorge caught one with no glove,” Jeter said. “When (Luis) Castillo dropped it, I told you it can happen to anyone. It’s just one of those things. I have no clue.” Posada smiled and said of Jeter, “I wasn’t showing him up.” He also explained why he argued with the plate umpire, C. B. Bucknor, after making the catch. Posada wanted to know why Figgins was not called out immediately, and said Bucknor had no answer. “He didn’t make a call at all,” Posada said. “As soon as he makes contact with me, it’s obstruction. The ball’s on top of me.” Manager Joe Girardi said Posada told him Figgins had stripped his glove on purpose, but that is not what Posada told the news media. “I don’t think it was on purpose,” he said. “There was no call by the umpire. That’s what bugged me the most.” In any case, Posada’s grab, while not acrobatic, puts him in the company of others who have made bare-handed catches of fly balls, including Kevin Mitchell of the Giants and David Wright of the Mets. --
