http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/oconnor/2003-12-11-oconnor_x.htm
Roger Clemens
His broken heart.
No matter what he claimed Thursday, the day he signed with the Astros for
three years and $31.5 million, Pettitte was driven away by a boss who still
didn't know what he had after he lost it. After failing to recruit his own
free agent in the immediate wake of the World Series, Steinbrenner had one
last chance Wednesday night to show his best pitcher and one of the game's
best citizens a little overdue respect. The man who has opened his vault to
the likes of Raul Mondesi, Sterling Hitchcock, Weaver and Drew Henson slammed
it shut for the 31-year-old pitcher who's collected more playoff victories
(13) than any ace dead or alive.
"We hate to lose Andy Pettitte," Steinbrenner said in his much-too-little,
much-too-late statement, punctuated by his warning that those already
crowning the Boston Red Sox shouldn't "bet the house." Did Steinbrenner even
once pick up the phone to tell Pettitte he wanted him back in the Bronx?
"No, he did not," reported the new pride of the Astros.
Steinbrenner only covets his neighbor's sports cars. He falls over himself in
pursuit of Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, Jason Giambi and Sheffield but treats
the ultra-professional homegrown stars who have won him multiple
championships like ill-behaved children in need of a timeout. Bernie Williams
was made to sweat out his last-second deal. Derek Jeter wasn't even given a
news conference for his $189 million deal. Joe Torre managed a World Series
without a contract.
Now Torre will have to manage a season without Pettitte, the Yankee who gave
birth to a bygone dynasty by winning his indelible Game 5 duel with John
Smoltz in the 1996 World Series. It was a moment Steinbrenner honored by once
going Mount George over a photo of Pettitte's son in a Mets cap and by once
trying to trade Pettitte in a midsummer night's fit.
Torre jumped in front of that train, inspiring Steinbrenner to say it was
time for Pettitte to "show what kind of man he is." He's a man of his word,
Pettitte proved Thursday. A family man who needed to break from the
dysfunctional one that forbids public displays of affection for its own.
"Sunday night at church was when I saw Andy at peace with this," Tom Pettitte
said. "He was watching his three kids in a Christmas play, and I saw true
contentment in his eyes. Until that time, he was torn between two places. I
mean, how do you leave a place where you've spent so many years?"
Father and son talked about staying with the Yankees and making a run at
Whitey Ford. The pitcher prayed, talked to Jeter and fielded frantic calls
from Yankeeland he dismissed as "last-minute desperation."
"How could the Yankees not pay more attention to him," Ford said. "I remember
the first time I saw Andy in spring training. He was warming up down the
right-field line and I watched him for 10 minutes and said, 'I think that
kid's going to be a Yankee for a long time.' "
Ford was told Pettitte should've been a Yankee for life. "Yeah," he said, "if
only someone used his head."
George Steinbrenner lost his instead.
Pettitte almost dealt
2003/10/24
The New York Yankees probably will make signing pitcher Andy Pettitte their
No. 1 priority this offseason.
But there was a time when owner George Steinbrenner wanted to trade Pettitte
- and almost had a deal that would have sent him to the Philadelphia Phillies
midway through 1999.
Before the trade was finalized, general manager Brian Cashman, manager Joe
Torre and pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre were on a conference call with
Steinbrenner, saying the trade would not be a good deal for the Yankees.
"I remember him saying, 'You better be right, or you know what's going to
happen,' " Cashman says.
Who made the most convincing argument to keep Pettitte?
"Who knows who he listened to," Cashman says. "Joe, Mel and I fought to keep
Andy Pettitte."
