A.J. Burnett has accepted a five-year, $82.5 million deal from the Yankees New York Yankees .A major league official with knowledge of Burnett's decision said the deal will become official when Burnett passes a Yankees physical. Though Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, refused to comment, a person connected to the Braves said yesterday they were informed Burnett had chosen the Yankees. GM Brian Cashman didn't return numerous calls. Getting Burnett, 32 on Jan. 3, to join CC Sabathia is an expensive exacta but one that gives the Yankees the best one-two pitching combo in the AL East. The Yankees bagged the 28-year-old Sabathia this week with a seven-year, $161 million deal that includes an opt-out clause after three years. Combined with the $82.5 million spent on Burnett, that's $243.5 million in five days. And the Yankees, who had $88 million come off the books after a very discouraging 2008 season, still have money to chase Derek Lowe, Ben Sheets, Andy Pettitte Andy Pettitte and possibly Mark Teixeira or Manny Ramirez. "I can sense the excitement and the confidence that's spreading around the entire organization about what we're getting done and what we may get done still," Hank Steinbrenner told The Associated Press. "A rising tide lifts all boats, and the confidence and the excitement right now among the team and the organization is contagious." Out of that $88 million, Sabathia will earn $23 million next season and Burnett will pull down $16.5 million. That leaves $39.5 million for Cashman to play with, if he wants to keep the payroll the same. No doubt money played a part. The Yankees offered more and the Braves were wary of a fifth year for a pitcher who has had medical problems but did go 18-10 and led the AL in strikeouts with 231 last year. However, the Braves believed location may have been a factor. Burnett lives in Maryland and has a five-acre horse ranch north of Baltimore. His wife detests flying, so the 3?-hour car ride to The Bronx is more attractive than the 11-hour trek to Atlanta. Burnett's contract with the Blue Jays included eight round-trip limo trips from Maryland to Toronto. The Yankees aren't high on such extras. Because he has been on the disabled list nine times since 2000, injuries make Burnett a risk, but what pitcher is guaranteed to avoid the DL? The fact Burnett's two best years - 2005 and 2008 - were walk years raises a red flag. So, too, do bouts of immaturity in the past. As for other issues, nothing concrete came out of Cashman's trip to Houston to see Pettitte. The club wants Pettitte, 36, back on a one-year deal for $10 million, and Pettitte is bitter about taking a pay cut from the $16 million he earned this past season when he went 14-14. The Yankees and Brewers continue to talk about a Mike Cameron-for-Melky Cabrera Melky Cabrera deal. The Brewers want to move Cameron's $10 million contract and use that money to acquire pitching after losing Sabathia and likely losing Sheets. The Brewers asked for and were denied Mark Melancon, Jose Veras and Phil Coke.
