Is it a possibility that the Jays will try and shop him? -- Chris E., Oakville, Ontario There is nothing coming from the Blue Jays' camp to even remotely indicate that the club is shopping Halladay this winter. A similar report came out around the July 31 Trade Deadline this past season and was also denied by the team. Halladay is the face of the franchise and is currently under contract for the next two seasons, scheduled to make $14.25 million in 2009 and $15.75 million in 2010. If anything, the Blue Jays would probably be looking toward negotiating with Halladay on a new contract extension. At the end of last season, the Blue Jays indicated that they were interested in extending Halladay's deal, but there's been no update yet in regards to any talks between the two sides. As of right now, it's still not clear if Toronto has established what its payroll will be for the 2009 season. The Jays are still sorting out a number of off-the-field issues, including searching for a new president and CEO and trying to re-sign A.J. Burnett. If the Jays do look into Halladay's contract situation before the '09 season, it'd likely come closer to Spring Training, after some of those other details are ironed out. Are the Blue Jays seriously thinking about giving Burnett another five-year contract? I know he had a good year last season for Toronto, but he's spent a lot of time on the disabled list in previous years. -- Jason R., Toronto It's highly unlikely that the Blue Jays would guarantee Burnett five more years as part of a new contract. That doesn't mean that Toronto isn't against including a fifth year in the deal, which is the contract length that Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, is seeking for his client. If the Jays did include a fifth year, it'd probably be a type of vesting option -- based on performance over the previous four years. Burnett's history of injury (he's landed on the DL 10 times in 10 seasons) presents a risk for any long-term contract, especially one as long as five years. The Yankees and Red Sox are also in on the Burnett sweepstakes, but both of those clubs also appear hesitant to dangle a five-year contract as bait. Even so, Braunecker seems confident that Burnett will sign a five-year pact. The Orioles, Phillies and Braves have also been tied to Burnett in various reports. The Blue Jays were one of the worst home run-hitting teams in the Majors in 2008. What are the Jays' chances of signing a big hitter if they don't bring back Burnett? -- Brian P., Orlando, Fla.
