Cashman said he made the rounds with all the agents representing players of interest. The Yankees, with unrivaled resources, figure to get enough love back to make this one of the most intriguing winters in franchise history. The marketplace is loaded with high-end talent, from power hitters Manny Ramirez and Mark Teixeira to initialed power pitchers such as CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. The representatives of these athletes, and dozens more, are waiting to see precisely what kind of love the Yankees will be willing to show when the words involving money begin to flow. There also are trade winds blowing, notably involving 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy. The Padres' ace would prefer to pursue his next Cy Young in the NL, but he could be talked into a new home in the South Bronx, it appears, if the Yankees can satisfy San Diego in ways the Braves, Cubs, Cardinals, Astros or Dodgers can't. The Yankees may be on the "back-burner" with Peavy, as Padres GM Kevin Towers put it, but they've been known to turn up the heat quickly. And they have low-salaried youngsters such as Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Jeffrey Marquez, Brett Gardner and Austin Jackson sure to hold appeal in dollar-conscious San Diego. When Towers talks about Peavy, it is clear the pitcher with electric stuff and the Yankees have something in common. "Jake is all about winning," Towers said. "I think I know the guy, and that's what drives him." Peavy has four years and about $60 million left on a contract that likely would need to be adjusted upward to accommodate a move to the Big Apple. Cashman would find a lot of David Cone in Peavy, an intense competitor similar in pitching style and temperament to the former Yankees ace. "My job is to shore up weaknesses," Cashman said, pointing out that pitching, defense and speed were not Yankees strengths in 2008. "I'd love to have a pitching and defense team first, and the rest fall in place. I don't see any of that transpiring." Sabathia, Burnett, Peavy or Derek Lowe could go a long way toward changing that. Teixeira could do wonders for the infield with his defense at first, to say nothing of producing runs in bunches with his bat. And a rumored deal for the Brewers' Mike Cameron could deliver a respected center fielder. At the moment, Cashman's concerns start with his starters. He has two: Joba Chamberlain and Chien-Ming Wang. Identifying three more starters is Cashman's chief assignment. Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina are possibilities. Both are free agents, with Pettitte seemingly eager to return to New York and Mussina reportedly unsure if he wants to follow up on his first 20-win season or retire. A month away from his 40th birthday, Moose stands 30 victories shy of 300. "We have needs, and [Mussina] could fill one of those needs," Cashman said, adding that the veteran right-hander has to make the decision whether he should get back in the saddle or ride into the sunset with his family. Decisions, decisions. Cashman knows the feeling.
