When he walked up the steps into the cramped room under the third-base stands at Fenway Park, Mussina's teammates were waiting and gave him a standing ovation. "Moose, Moose, Moose," they chanted, repeating the nickname he has been known by for 18 seasons in the majors. Mussina pitched six shutout innings to earn his 20th win as the Yankees beat the Red Sox 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader. "That feels good," said Mussina, who at 39 became the oldest pitcher to win 20 games for the first time. "I'm not sure I've ever been on a team that did that for somebody." Pitching with a bruised elbow that swelled as the game went on, Mussina allowed only three hits, walked two and struck out three. Of his 73 pitches, 48 were strikes. "It feels good to help somebody to accomplish so great a thing," catcher Jose Molina said. "It's huge for him. I just feel so happy for him. After the struggles he had last year, to have such a great season and win 20 games is impressive." Molina caught the game with a sore knee. Closer Mariano Rivera, who needs shoulder surgery, got the final four outs for his 39th save. The Yankees were determined to win what was an otherwise insignificant game. "Because of what Moose has done for us and what Moose has meant for the game, you wanted this so badly for him," manager Joe Girardi said. After thanking his teammates, Mussina celebrated with a can of Coke and a large container of McDonald's french fries. Girardi, who has banned junk food in the clubhouse, didn't mind. He even let Mussina take out the lineup card for the second game. Xavier Nady's three-run homer gave Mussina a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Boston put two runners on in the bottom of the inning but Mussina got J.D. Drew to bounce into a double play. After getting Jed Lowrie looking for his 2,813th career strikeout to end the sixth inning, Mussina watched the next two innings from the clubhouse. There was some drama when Boston scored twice in the eighth, but Rivera ended the inning without further damage. "That's when I knew it looked good," Mussina said. Mussina watched the ninth inning from the bench as the Yankees scored three runs against Jonathan Papelbon. He hugged each teammate after the game ended, embracing Rivera the longest. Until yesterday, Mussina's career had lacked that one accomplishment to put in bold letters. He had twice won 19 games. He came a pitch away from a perfect game. He was once second in the Cy Young voting. But this time he did it. "Having waited to my last year, after all these years in New York, I'm 39 years old and I've been close and I've been close to other things; it's worth being close all those times to be able to do it this late in your career," he said. Mussina backtracked a few minutes later, saying this wasn't necessarily his last season. But it wasn't with much conviction. Many of his teammates would be surprised to see him report to spring training in February. "As of right now it's my last game in my last year and I don't know what the future holds," Mussina said. "It could be my last year; it may not be my last year. When you get to your 18th season, it could always be your last year." Mussina has made more than $115 million in his career, more than enough to provide for generations of Mussinas to live quite comfortably in Montoursville, the small central Pennsylvania town where he was born and makes his home. If any player could walk away after one of his best seasons, it's Mussina. "I think it would be pretty cool. I don't know what everybody else thinks but I think it would be pretty cool," he said. "I've been envious of every guy who has retired since I've been playing." Mussina (20-9) was 1-3 with a 5.75 ERA after his first four starts. A poor performance against the White Sox on April 23 might have knocked him out of the rotation. "Unless some miracle happened, they were probably going to make a change," said Mussina, who was 11-10 in 2007. It wasn't quite a miracle. But Mussina allowed two runs over seven innings for his second win. Starting that night, he posted a 3.10 ERA over 30 starts. Winning 300 games would mean certain induction to the Hall of Fame. But at 270-152, Mussina may have already done enough. He is one of 18 pitchers in history to be at least 115 games over .500 and already has more victories than such legends as Bob Feller, Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. "All I'm trying to do is get in the discussion," Mussina said. Mussina was asked how satisfied he would be with what he has accomplished were he to retire. His answer seemed telling. "Completely satisfied," he said with a wide smile and a slug of Coke.
