PETERSBURG, Fla. - Brian Cashman refused to say yesterday whether he wants to stay on as Yankees general manager after his contract expires Oct. 31. Yankees ownership has never indicated it doesn't want to retain Cashman, so the decision seems to be his. "I just think the focus is right here (on the field)," Cashman said. "It's kind of been a practice that's evolved here (to not deal with impending free agency during the season), and it applies to me, too. All that stuff needs to wait till the end, and hopefully the end isn't any time soon." Co-chairperson Hank Steinbrenner could not be reached Wednesday, but in June, Steinbrenner told The Star-Ledger he wanted to keep Cashman as GM and that he planned to speak to Cashman while Cashman was in Tampa for the draft. After the draft, Cashman told The Star-Ledger, "I feel really good about the conversation that we had." Cashman has certainly acted like a GM who is in for the long haul, resisting some short-term fixes such as a trade for Johan Santana. "There's no open negotiation right now: 'Hey, when you're ready, let's go talk,'" Cashman said. "It's not like that. It's, 'Let's take care of business and get this thing right,' which we haven't done a good enough job of doing so far this year. And then when the dust settles, conversations will be had. Where they lead, I can't predict." Mike Mussina's shot at his first 20-win season could get a boost from an extra start down the stretch. Manager Joe Girardi said if Mussina is up to it physically, he will pitch every fifth day the rest of the season, as opposed to every fifth game. That would mean skipping or pushing back other starters to bring Mussina back sooner after off-days. "We want him to pitch as much as possible," Girardi said. Under that plan, Mussina would pitch five more times instead of four: Sunday at Seattle, Sept. 12 against Tampa Bay, Sept. 17 against the Chicago White Sox, Sept. 23 at Toronto and in the Sept. 28 season finale at Boston. Mussina is 17-7, his most wins since 2003, and has lost just once in his past 12 starts. Alex Rodriguez went into Wednesday night's game tied for 12th all time in home runs with Mike Schmidt, at 548. "Mike Schmidt is special to me," Rodriguez said, "because I've always looked up to Mike. He's a friend and someone who I admire."
