Future Thunder: Pat Venditte
(As promised, here’s the feature on Venditte. I think you’ll see this in
the paper at some point, just not this version of it. I’ll need to
re-arrange some stuff, and make some improvements, etc. This is basically
the quick “don’t let people down and get something posted” version of it.”)
是未来Thunder(2A) Pat Venditte
Trenton Thunder reliever Eric Wordekemper will never forget the first time he
played catch with Staten Island Yankees reliever Pat Venditte.
Teammates in college at Creighton; Wordekemper a junior and Venditte a
freshman, the two were paired up to throw to each other early in the season.
1A Yankees
“We had a bunch of new kids on campus, so I wasn’t familiar with who I was
playing catch with. The first day we were having pitcher-catcher workouts, I
was playing catch with this kid,” recalled Wordekemper.
“We get to about 60 feet, and we were just having a nice catch. Then we get
to 90 feet, and I notice he’s throwing with a different arm. Now at the
time, I didn’t know it was Pat playing catch with me. So we got back in,
and I’m like, ‘You throw with both of your arms?’ and he goes, ‘Yeah, I’
m Pat Venditte,’ and I go, ‘Oh, so this is the kid we have.’”
Whether it’s fans, teammates or opposing hitters, reactions range from
amazement to befuddlement at the ambidextrous Nebraska native’s unique gift.
And Venditte’s been getting it ever since he started switch-pitching at the
age of three.
Venditte
“I’m a natural right-hander,” Venditte confessed.
“My dad worked with me in developing my left side, and it progressed over
the years. By the time I got into my high school career and my college
career, it was pretty much equal.”
Much of that development took place in Venditte’s backyard. Of course, this
wasn’t just any ordinary chunk of dirt and grass. In fact, it wasn’t grass
at all.
Venditte’s backyard was constructed of Astroturf.
In that backyard, his dad had built him a batting cage, a pitching machine
and a bullpen mound with lights that was fully equipped with a radar gun.
“It helped me prepare for my future,” Venditte said.
“It didn’t really show at first, but I stuck with it, and my dad and my
other coaches helped me, and it’s really starting to pay off.”
The payoff is finally starting to unfold at the professional level, as he was
drafted for the second consecutive year by the New York Yankees.
Selected in the 20th round this year, Venditte quickly signed and was
assigned to New York’s short-season Single-A affiliate in Staten Island.
1A Staten Island.
“I wasn’t sure I was going to go that high,” he said.
“In my junior year, I went in the 45th (round), so it was a pleasant
surprise to get that call at 20.”
Venditte, who called the four years he spent at Creighton the best experience
of his life, was a switch-pitcher from the second he stepped on campus. The
walk-on, whose goal was to simply pitch in college, just couldn’t
necessarily do it mid-inning when he first started.
“His freshman year, we didn’t allow him to switch in the middle of an
inning,” Wordekemper said.
“But the next two or three years, I understand they were switching him in
the middle of innings. He developed very well from his freshman year to his
senior year and I think he’ll be very successful in minor league ball.”
He throws a low 90’s fastball and a hard, biting curveball using an over the
top delivery from the right side, and throws a mid 80’s fastball and a
slider from his left.
Perhaps more amazing is that he does it all with just one glove, a large,
custom-made piece of equipment that features six finger holes and two webbed
sides.
Clearly, you can’t find something like that on the shelf of your local
sporting goods store.
“My first one was made by Mizuno, but when I got to Creighton, they have a
contract with Louisville,” Venditte said.
“After my sophomore year, I started using the Louisville one. They have a
five finger version of it too, and I’ve been trying that out as well.”
Venditte
Staten Island Yankees pitching coach Pat Daneker, who briefly pitched in the
big leagues with the Chicago White Sox, has never seen a switch-pitcher
before, no less a six-fingered glove.
“It’s definitely the first time I’ve ever seen that,” Daneker said.
“He’s definitely an interesting guy to watch pitch. You’d think when you
watch a guy throw like that, that he throws real good with one arm and not so
good with the other. But it looks pretty good from both sides, I was really
surprised.”
Considering the events of Thursday night during his professional debut in
Brooklyn, it’s this statement that may stand out above all the rest…
“You might see something kind of crazy tonight if there’s a switch hitter
that comes up,” Venditte said.
“We’ll have to play it out and see how it works.”
Venditte
As for Wordekemper, he and Venditte still stay in touch on a regular basis.
“I texted with him the other night, he sent me some words of encouragement,”
Venditte said.
“He said just to try to outwork everybody else, that’s the only way to do
it. That’s how he did, and it’s working for him.”
Venditte
Thunder ETA: 2011. Venditte’s stuff is good, but nobody’s going to have
any clue what to do with him and it’s likely he moves at a slow pace through
the system. While his curve from the right side has a lot of break, but he’
s either going to have to stick to one side — something he told me he would
do if the organization felt that was best — or develop more pitches. If
guys know there’s a 50-50 shot at what’s coming, the odds can only be in
his favor for so long before someone sits on one and deposits it into orbit.
