Support for Girardi, a Bit Less for Cashman
时间Tue May 20 17:43:04 2008
George Steinbrenner
Cashman
。"

Support for Girardi, a Bit Less for Cashman
By TYLER KEPNER
Published: May 20, 2008
Not long ago, a humbling weekend for a stumbling Yankees team could have
provoked the principal owner, George Steinbrenner, into criticizing the
manager. Times have changed, but only to a point.
Hank Steinbrenner, who is co-chairman of the Yankees with his brother, Hal,
praised Manager Joe Girardi in a wide-ranging telephone interview on Monday.
But with the last-place Yankees sputtering along at 20-24, the architect of
the team, General Manager Brian Cashman, received only measured support.
Speaking of Girardi, Steinbrenner said: “I think he’s doing fine. It’s
pretty simple — he’s playing the hand that he was dealt, just like I am. He
’s doing the best job he can. I have complete confidence in Joe.”
Girardi is signed through 2010, and the Steinbrenner brothers interviewed him
for the job. Cashman has an expiring contract, and his future is uncertain as
he and the new bosses adjust to each other against the backdrop of an
underachieving team.
The Yankees will get a boost on Tuesday when Alex Rodriguez returns to the
lineup after missing 17 games with a strained right quadriceps. The way the
season plays out from here could determine Cashman’s future.
“If Brian wants to be the G.M. next year, there’s a chance he will be,”
Steinbrenner said. “If he doesn’t want to, he won’t be. At this point, do
I still want him to be the G.M.? Yeah, I do.”
Steinbrenner wanted to trade for Johan Santana last winter before Cashman and
Hal Steinbrenner decided against it. He made several references on Monday to
the next off-season, stressing that he was determined to make any moves
necessary.
“My job is to win, and I’m going to do everything I can to win,”
Steinbrenner said. “It’s not like I just came in off the farm, like some
people claim. I’ve been around the game for 35 years, but this is my first
year, along with my brother, in running the team, and I have to play with the
cards I was dealt, just like Joe does.
“Whether those cards work or not will determine what happens in the
off-season, and I’m going to do whatever I have to do to win,” he
continued. “There’s been a lot of mistakes the last five to seven years
that I had nothing to do with and Joe had nothing to do with — and quite a
few things Brian had nothing to do with.”
When Cashman agreed to return after the 2005 season, he did so with the
promise that the baseball operations department would be organized below him.
Since then, there have been few, if any, moves that Cashman did not endorse.
But if the Yankees miss the playoffs — and if Steinbrenner believes that
Santana would have made the difference — it could undercut Cashman’s
authority. If that happens, Cashman may not even want the job anymore.
Cashman said he spoke with at least one Steinbrenner family member every day.
But the sides do not expect to discuss a new contract until the season is
over.
“My job as the G.M. is to get ourselves championship-caliber now as well as
in the future,” Cashman said. “That’s the balancing act. Only ownership
can answer the bottom line from there. I wouldn’t put myself in position to
speak for them.”
The Yankees’ farm teams are playing well, but the top prospects Phil Hughes
and Ian Kennedy have not seemed ready for the majors. And the offense is in a
tailspin, averaging 2.82 runs over the last 11 games and 4.07 for the season.
Last year, the Yankees averaged 5.98 runs a game for 968 in all, their
highest total since 1937. At their current pace, they would score 659 runs
this season, a staggering drop-off.
One scout who has followed the Yankees recently said some of the team’s
older veterans have looked more vulnerable to inside pitches because they are
losing bat speed. But the scout acknowledged that injuries to Rodriguez and
Jorge Posada have been devastating.
“The Yankees built their team around a big offense scoring a ton of runs,”
said the scout, who was granted anonymity so he could speak candidly about
another team. “One-fourth of the offense — what is it, 250 runs batted in?
— is basically out of the lineup right now. It’s a lot harder to compete,
especially because this is the worst Yankees bench I’ve ever seen.”
Since Rodriguez went on the disabled list April 29, his replacements have hit
.211 with no home runs and three runs batted in. Posada’s replacement, José
Molina, has also struggled. For Steinbrenner, those problems alone do not
explain the offensive breakdown.
“Your entire lineup doesn’t go dead in the five months of the off-season,”
Steinbrenner said. “It’s an impossibility, a physical impossibility. They
don’t all become that bad in five months.
“I don’t know what the reason is. Injuries certainly are part of it, but I
don’t know the reason we’ve had so many cold bats. Eventually, I really do
believe we’re going to get back to at least the vicinity of where we were
last year.”
The loss of the right-handed Rodriguez and the switch-hitting Posada has made
the Yankees look helpless against left-handers. Since Rodriguez went down,
they have lost seven of eight games started by lefties.
“We expected to at least hold down the fort and put together some quality
games and be better than what we have been,” Johnny Damon said. “But we
haven’t.”
Cashman said Rodriguez’s return would help balance the lineup, and while he
made no guarantees, he said he believed in the hitters’ track records.
“You have to stay objective and not get emotional, and you have to attack
what ails you,” Cashman said. “I can offer facts about why we are where we
are. Some people would take those as excuses, and it doesn’t necessarily
matter. The one thing I’ll tell you is, as long as we can get healthy, I do
trust and expect that we will perform much closer to our norms than we are
right now.”
Steinbrenner said repeatedly that he believed the Yankees could recover and
make the playoffs, just as they did in 2005 and 2007. Asked if that history
was instructive for this year, Cashman gave a weary and knowing reply.
“Yes and no,” he said. “I’ve been down this road before. But I don’t
like being down this road — ever.”
