DETROIT _ Mother Nature slapped the Yankees hard in the face several times
during April. Today, she planted a big Mother's Day kiss on their lips when an
all-day rain forced the postponement of a game against the Tigers at Comerica
Park.
四月份老天爷对洋基不赏脸,母亲节却送来一个大礼,下一整天的雨,迫使对老虎的赛程

Until the washout the Yankees said they were sticking with a plan that had Kei
Igawa starting Wednesday against the Rays in St. Petersburg.

Now, they won't need a fifth starter until Friday night in the first game of
the Subway Series against the Mets at Yankee Stadium. And with options they
didn't have for Wednesday, the Yankees can smartly delete Igawa from the
rotation and give themselves a better chance of getting a well-pitched game
than the $46 million bust can deliver.

While Girardi said the lefty remains in the picture for Thursday or Friday, the
Yankees could instruct SWB manager Dave Miley to limit Ian Kennedy's innings
today in the first game of a double-header against Indianapolis. Kennedy was
rained out yesterday. If Kennedy works extended innings today it's not likely
the Yankees would bring him back on short rest Friday.

Today's development means Andy Pettitte opens a four-game series tomorrow night
in Tampa and will be followed by Chien-Ming Wang and Mike Mussina. Darrell
Rasner has been told he is starting Thursday or Friday. There is a possibility
Igawa could start Thursday or Friday but after the Tigers spanked him Friday
night (six runs and 11 hits in three-plus innings) it will be hard for the
Yankees to give him the ball again and expect his teammates to have confidence
in him.

Ultimately, the Yankees want Kennedy to be successful at the big league level
but they are aware he dominated last week in his first Triple-A start.

"You feel pretty good obviously but you still have to make that next step and
do it here on a consistent basis,'' Girardi said of Kennedy, who was sent out

Other options for the Yankees are journeyman right-hander Dan Giese who is 2-2
with a 1.13 ERA in nine games (six starts) for SWB and pitched Saturday. Steven
White is 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA and starts the second game of the twinbill
tonight.

As for Igawa, he could land in the bullpen or be sent back to SWB if he doesn't
start Thursday or Friday. In light of the way Darrell Rasner has pitched in two
starts (2-0; 3.00 ERA) replacing Phil Hughes in the rotation, it makes Igawa
look bad.
井川如果周四或周五没有先发,他可能转调牛棚,或送回小联盟 SWB 队. 由於 Rasner

Even when you figure in the Tigers' success against left-handed pitching (they
are hitting .295 and are 5-1), Igawa provided nothing positive Friday night
when the Tigers swung and missed twice in 64 pitches. Worse, while everybody
believed he was awful, Igawa didn't feel that way.
即使老虎队比较擅长於对付左投手( 打击率 .295 五胜一败 ),井川周五的表现,还是没
有可取之处,老虎队对他投出的 64 球,只有二次挥空.更糟糕的是当所有人都觉得他表现
糟糕,井川却不这麽认为.
