And the Yankees are optimistic Rodriguez will be able to play for them this weekend. A-Rod, who suffered a strained right quadriceps last Sunday and then missed Tuesday's and Wednesday's games for the birth of his second daughter, was unable to test his leg yesterday because rain forced the cancellation of batting practice. "Hopefully I'll be ready to go pretty soon," he said. "I hope (today). We'll see. ... I'm optimistic it's going to be nothing past this weekend. "The big test is going to be running." Rodriguez said manager Joe Girardi will use him as a DH one day over the weekend before returning him to third base. "That's crossed my mind, yes," Girardi said. The cigars had custom labels: "It's a girl/Ella Alexander Rodriguez/4-21-08." Rodriguez said he made it to the Miami hospital from New York on Monday 10 minutes after the delivery. "The timing came from God," he said. "It couldn't have been better timing." ---- Brian Bruney who has a 1.59 ERA in nine appearances, could be headed for the disabled list. His right foot is in a protective boot, and he is scheduled to see a specialist today in New York. Bruney was injured on the same play Tuesday where Jason Giambi took a grounder off his right thumb. Bruney was going from the mound to cover first, stopped and then started again. "When I planted to try to get going again," he said, "my right foot turned to the inside and the grass kind of slipped out. "As I was sitting (in the dugout after coming out) it started to throb. ... That night it woke me up probably three times. And I could hardly walk on it (Wednesday) morning." ---- Pitching matchups the four-game series that opens tonight at Cleveland: Andy Pettitte (3-1, 2.45 ERA) vs. Paul Byrd (0-2, 4.43); Ian Kennedy (0-2, 9.64 ERA) vs. lefty Jeremy Sowers (just called up); Chien-Ming Wang (4-0, 3.94) vs. C.C. Sowers is 0-2, but with a 3.18 ERA in four starts at Triple-A Buffalo. Sowers opened the '07 season in the rotation before a demotion to Buffalo. Because of Thursday's doubleheader with the Royals, the Indians need a spot starter for this game, and the 23-year-old Laffey will get the call. Laffey filled in admirably in the last two months of '07, after Cliff Lee was demoted to Buffalo. He went 4-2 with a 4.56 ERA in nine starts, and he pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings against the Red Sox in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series. In his first four starts at Buffalo, the 23-year-old Laffey was 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA, striking out 20 and walking six in 26 innings. --
